Richard John "Dick" McIntosh Obituary

1928-2025 On December 4, 2025, our much-loved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and dear friend passed away surrounded by his family. Dick leaves behind his sister Barbara Currie, his daughters Pam McIntosh and Anne McIntosh (Phil Mindorff) and sons Doug (Cathy) and Dan. Revered "Baba" to grandchildren Rob McIntosh (Bethany Smith), Richard Gardiner (Jazmine), Katie McIntosh (Jon Carrick), Leah Mindorff (Amir Mardan) and Calhum Mindorff (Shayla Verburg), and "Great Baba" to Moon and Ellie, Auston and Taylor, Joni and Edele, and Eleni. He also leaves behind his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 58 years, Lois, his brother Fraser, his sister Marnie Troughton and his parents Gordon and Dorothy McIntosh. Dick will also be missed by his many friends, including his good friend Dorothy Phillips. Dick was born in 1928 at Women's College Hospital in Toronto (which never failed to embarrass him). He grew up in Toronto, Barrie and Hamilton, attending Westdale High School in Hamilton. Dick was a proud graduate of McMaster University in 1950 with a degree in Political Economy. It was at McMaster that he met Lois and they were married in 1953. While embarking on his career post- McMaster, he attended The University of Toronto, earning a Master of Commerce degree in 1954. During his undergraduate years, Dick served as a Radio/Navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force reserve, flying in the Dakota DC-3 and ultimately training in the nascent CF-100, Canada's first jet interceptor/fighter, achieving the rank of Flying Officer. The certificate awarding him his initial rank as Pilot Officer by King George VI was executed by the famed British General, Alexander of Tunis (then Governor-General of Canada) and was proudly displayed for decades on the wall of Dick's washroom for all to see. His love of aviation continued in the form of a passion for collecting First Day flight covers (and an extensive stamp collection) which filled the shelves of his den and gave him many hours of enjoyment. Dick had a long and distinguished career at the East York Board of Education as Superintendent of Business and Plant, retiring at the age of 65. He subsequently served on the Board of OMERS for several years post-retirement. He was a long-time member of the Ontario Association of School Business Officials and the Association of School Business Officials (Canada and the U.S.), serving as President of OASBO and on the Board of ASBO. Dick and Lois enjoyed many years of attending ASBO meetings across Canada and the United States. Dick's most memorable trip was travelling to the Soviet Union and China as part of an ASBO International delegation in 1983. Dick was a long-time member and elder of St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, a curling member at Donalda Club, a member of the Kiwanis Club and was still an avid bridge player at 97 years of age. Dick and Lois had an active social life during their marriage, with many life-long friends from all aspects of their life. Dick was a cottager at heart, with many years spent at the old McIntosh family cottage on Lake Temagami until it was sold in 1964, followed by many happy summers spent on Lake Muskoka and Lake of Bays. Dick loved to fish and was thrilled when his grandchildren showed much more interest in fishing than his children did. Dick was a man of integrity who impressed us all with his tremendous intellect, his compassion and his great sense of humour. Although a fourth generation (and devoted) Canadian, Dick was very proud of his Scottish heritage and a big fan of the bagpipes, enjoying every opportunity he had to wear a kilt and celebrate Robbie Burns Day. Our heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at North York General Hospital for their compassionate care of Dick during the past few weeks. A service and celebration of Dick's life will be held on Saturday February 7, 2026 at 1 p.m. at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, 1 Greenland Rd in Don Mills, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, North York General Hospital or your favourite charity would be appreciated.

Dick was a wonderful colleague in the East York Board before I left for the Peterborough Board.

I had the privilege of working closely with Dick during my time as Director of Education in East York. I credit Dick as the one person who kept us solvent. When other Board were scrambling for dollars East York was financially sound because of Dick McIntosh´s financial leadership. When you wanted a dollar, Dick wanted proof that you needed the dollar! What a great guy with a great sense of humour.
