Richard MANICOM Obituary

RICHARD NICOL MANICOM October 25, 1946 - August 17, 2022 It is with great sadness that we announce Richard's (Dick, Dickie) passing at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus, after a brief illness. He is survived by his "current" wife, Esther Cormier of Ottawa; sons, James also of Ottawa, and Daniel (Elisabeth Després), of Toronto; step-daughter, Sarah Duguay (Thomas Gnyra) of Calgary; and two grandsons, Edward and Andrew of Ottawa and their mother, Caroline. He is also survived by his brother, Ernest (Jeane King); brothers-in-law, Peter Brown (Bonnie), Philip Brown (Joan Vanden Hazel), Henry Cormier; and sister-in-law, Denise Aube (Richard Harten), as well as his first wife, Ann Manicom. Also, nieces and nephews, Katherine Manicom, Sandra Griffiths, Leigh Giberson, and Shawna, Kira, and Kurtis Brown, and great-nieces and nephews, Nathan, Colin, Addison, and Madeleine. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Susan Manicom, and his second wife, Penelope Brown. Born in Montreal, Richard was a proud graduate of McGill University (class of 1967) where he studied math. This led him to a career of more than 50 years in information technology. He was a highly valued large IT project troubleshooter at IBM, resulting in the creation of a new title, Seniour Consulting Systems Engineer, just for him. He was also a celebrated head of IT at Revenue Canada and an in-demand consultant for both private and public sector IT projects. His ability to ask the right questions at the right time was unparalleled. That curiosity also fueled his life-long passion for knowledge, with an interest in almost everything. He was especially passionate about music (mainly written before the death of Bach), photography, as well as planes, trains, and automobiles. When he was into something, he went all the way, and loved sharing his knowledge. "I am glad you asked!" he would say. He was admired, respected, and so loved by so many. He will be greatly missed. A celebration of Richard's life will be held at the St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 1200 Ogilvie Road (at Aviation Parkway), Ottawa, on Saturday, September 10, 2022. The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m., and all are welcome to visit with the family from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. The family will observe private reflection time immediately following the ceremony, then host a reception at the family home shortly thereafter to further celebrate Richard's life in the way he enjoyed most - with family, friends, music, food, drink, and conversation. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Neurosurgery and Oncology Departments of the Ottawa Hospital for their hard work and compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to fund cancer research at the Ottawa Hospital Foundation (https://ohfoundation.ca) or the Charity of Your Choice.
