Richard SCULLY Obituary

Richard Joseph Scully June 30, 1958 - October 13, 2023 It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Rick Scully, husband of Ruth (Turnbull); father of Sarah (Mark Russell) and Adam; and "GrandDick" of Poppy. Son of Phyllis and the late Ernie Scully; brother of Geoff; and friend of so many. Taken from us very quickly by CJD, a fatal and rare neurological disorder, only 17 days after being officially diagnosed. Raised in Sarnia, ON, Rick developed a love for hockey at an early age. He was recruited to attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, from 1976-80. The Brown hockey family have played an important role in his life right until his passing. His career began with the Los Angeles Kings, followed by Procter & Gamble, GSK, The Alderwoods Group, and ultimately, Nuvo Garage, where he capitalized on his creative and organizational skills. Rick had many passions, but none more so than his immediate family. Sunday family dinners with a meal extraordinaire cooked on Ricardo's Home Grill, lots of red wine and much laughter. As a family, we are truly each other's best friends with Rick at the helm. His sense of calm in good times and bad provided a guiding light for parenting. Many trips with friends and family, often around golf, have been enjoyed around the world and over the years. His mantra was to live life today and not wait until tomorrow. Avid golfer, fisherman, handyman, clotheshorse, chef and pickler, most famously known for Dick's Pics. He spent this past summer rebuilding our deck and designing an incredible outdoor kitchen that, sadly, he will never be able to use. Rick will be missed by his Palmira family of friends in Bonita Springs, FL, where the last 17 seasons have been spent. And, of course, Bayview GCC, which has been part of our family for 33 years. His endless generosity, kindness and loyalty will never be forgotten. We thank all for the overwhelming outpouring of love over recent weeks as Rick battled this devastating disease. A visitation from 12:30-2:00 p.m., followed by Rick's Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. will be held at Bayview Golf and Country Club, 25 Fairway Heights Drive, Thornhill, ON, on Monday, October 16th. In lieu of flowers, we ask donations be directed to Crohn's and Colitis Canada, the Scully family's charity of choice via crohnsandcolitis.ca/richardscully.

Ruth, Sarah and Adam, I was so very sorry to hear of Rick´s passing. He was without a doubt one of my favourite leaders. Smart, clever, patient and so much fun to work with and share some of life´s most important events. I will never forget the advice and wisdom he shared with me as I had my first daughter. He loved you all so much, his family meant the world to him. I´m so sorry for your loss. May he rest in peace and love.

I am so glad I was able to spend time and reconnect with Rick at last year's Earl Open as we had not seen each other for over 40 years. It was as if we had seen each other days before as that's the way it is with good friends. During the three years we spent as teammates/brothers at Brown, we had many ups and downs which bonded us for life and now beyond.
Rick was one of those people that was always worth listening to as he was very thoughtful and deep thinking.
Rick will be missed and remembered fondly by his former teammates and I'm sure many many people who were fortunate enough to count him as a friend.

To Rick´s Family:
Played hockey & baseball with Rick back in the 60´s & early 70´s in Sarnia . He was a gentle talent . Haven´t seen him in a very long time but conversed with his parents frequently over the years. A wonderful family.

I have many wonderful memories of you and your family, during the early 70´s. Watching you, with your mom and dad, display your great skills as a member of the Sarnia Bees hockey team, became a ritual for me. How proud we were of your poise and skill level. After leaving Sarnia to finish my degree in Halifax, I lived vicariously through your life, via my contact with your Dad and Mom. Always proud of the events in your life, I was devastated to not only learn of the recent passing of your father, Ernie, and now, hearing of the diagnosis of your newly acquired affliction and subsequent passing, albeit premature. I know that your life was filled with much joy and success, however, you were taken from us far too soon. God Bless you Rick, and may you rest in Peace. I extend my sincerest condolences to your wife Ruth, your children Sarah, and Adam, and to your mother Phyllis and brother Geoff. The Lord is at your side!

I had the pleasure of working with Rick for several years at Alderwoods Group, golfed at Bayview GCCC together and even benefitted from his top quality garage reno talents. Every interaction with Rick was filled with laughter and great stories. Always engaging and interested in others more than himself. My deepest condolences to Ruth and the kids. Gone far too soon. Our hearts are broken. One of my strongest memories of Rick is how kind and generous he was when we first Joined Bayview. That's exactly who he was, along with his great sense of humour. We send our most sincere condolences to Ruth, Adam, Sarah, and family.
