ROBERT ANGLIN Obituary

June 26, 1929 – January 24, 2026

Robert (Bob) Anglin, surrounded by his family, died peacefully at his home on January 24, 2026, in his 97th year. He was born and lived his life in Toronto. Bob was predeceased by his wife and life partner of 65 years, Margaret (née Fleming); his parents, George and Ruth; and his siblings, Marion, Douglas, and Mildred. He is survived by his 4 children, Paul (Yanmin), Gordon (Ricki), Maureen (Dominic), and Carolyn; his 2 grandchildren, Silke (Dorian) and Teagan; and his great-grandchild, Cassian. He is also survived by his cousins, George Van Nostrand and Margaret Farmer; and his many nieces and nephews. Bob was kind, generous, adventurous, and caring. He greatly enjoyed helping others. As a student at the University of Toronto, he studied Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. He met an eye-stopper in one class and was "so lucky to have married her". He worked his entire career at the same insurance company, mostly managing investments: "Helping other people by investing well gave me job satisfaction." He and Margaret enjoyed relaxing at the cottage near Thunder Bay and travelling to over 70 countries. On his own or with others, his adventures often passed though rarely visited destinations, leading to many stories. He sailed throughout the world, circumnavigated southern Ontario in a 16-foot dinghy, and walked the Bruce Trail end-to-end. Education was a constant theme in his life, as a student and teacher. After his degree, he achieved many hard-earned certifications and continued as a lifelong learner for decades at Living and Learning in Retirement. He was especially proud of the Offshore Sailing course he taught with the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron, and of helping English language learners through a Conversation Circle. At 96, he was still good with numbers and had informed opinions on world events. These few words are not enough to summarize a long, varied, and caring life. He was born at a time when "hobos" who knocked at his parents' door were given a big sandwich; he served warm meals to homeless people for many years; and he died at a time when many others continue this legacy of caring. As Bob said often, "I've had a very good life". He will be greatly missed by many. We will celebrate Bob Anglin's life at Eglinton St. George's United Church, 35 Lytton Blvd., Toronto on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 1 p.m. A livestream of the service can be accessed at: https://esgunited.org/funeral-services-live. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice or to the Robert and Margaret Anglin Distinguished Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Arts and Science.

I recall "Mr. Anglin" as a warm and gentle-man with a quick laugh and thoughful presence. I enjoyed visiting the Anglin home on holidays from my Waterloo studies. My best memory however is happening upon Mr. Anglin as he descended an airport bus in front of the Paris Opera (or was it I who got off the bus?); a wonderful surprise reminding me how friends may be any (and every) where. So glad our paths crossed. My world is richer for his presence and his generous giving to others. Inspiring.

My deepest condolences to Gord and his entire family. I am so glad I got to spend a brief bit of time (and space) with Bob. Inquisitive as he was, he just wanted to learn more about nature and the world around him.

Always enjoyed visiting Bob and Margaret who were excited to discuss family news . Bob was a clever man with a wry sense of humour that made each story he told end in hilarious laughter.
May his memories comfort the family during this sad time.
