Robert BANTING Obituary

ROBERT FREEBURNE BANTING July 18, 1928 - January 13, 2019 Robert passed away peacefully on January 13, 2019, at the age of 90. He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Dee; as well as sister, Barbara Banting Martin; brother-in-law, Barry Teepell; nephews, Kenneth Michael Martin, David Grant Martin and Edward Brian Mendham; nieces, Natalie Anne Mendham and Tracy Alison Mendham; and stepchildren, Gwendolyn Gove, Jeffrey Crawford, Shawn Hoskin and Jacqueline Madincea; along with the extended families of all. Bob was predeceased by parents, Albert Greenham Banting and Gladys Freeburne Banting; son, Stephen Paul Banting; and sister, Marian Banting Mendham. Born in Stoughton, Wisconsin, Bob moved in his early years to Canada, where he attended public school and received his secondary school training at F.R. Close Technical School. He earned a degree in architectural engineering from Kansas State University before studying business at McMaster University. He returned to Canada after graduating and started a successful, 60-year career in construction, architectural design and investments. Bob was an active member of his community in Hamilton, holding decades-long memberships in the Masonic Lodge, Rotary Club of Hamilton, Hamilton Thistle Curling Club and Hamilton Golf & Country Club. Among his many hobbies, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, reading, curling, squash and classical music. He was an extremely generous and giving philanthropist to his community, always giving to those in need, with never a thought of anything in return. Bob had a keen sense of humor and was a kind, caring, generous and gentle man. He will be greatly missed by many. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Clive Davis, a fine physician and man, who took great care of Bob. A private family service was held January 19, 2019. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to The Freeburne-Banting Foundation, #2000 - 240 Main St. East, Hamilton, Ontario L8N 1H5, which supports the healthcare community in Hamilton and Toronto.
