Robert CALDER Obituary
ROBERT ALAN CALDER MARCH 26, 1944 - OCTOBER 16, 2022 It is with a very broken heart that we say good-bye to Robert Alan Calder, who passed away at Toronto Western Hospital on October 16th, 2022. Rob leaves behind his loving wife and best friend, Cindy Hobman; his daughter, Courtney Pardon (Scott); and two step- granddaughters, Alexia and Cassandra Hobman. He will be forever loved, deeply missed and never forgotten. Rob came from humble beginnings and worked his way to a very successful career. He obtained his undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Toronto and his law degree from the University of Western Ontario. For many decades, Rob practiced litigation law in Toronto, appearing at all court levels including the Supreme Court of Canada. He and Cindy decided to leave Toronto and practiced together until retiring in 2012. During all of his years of practice, Rob had a reputation of being incredibly knowledgeable, fair, and most of all, honourable. Everyone knew him as a man of his word. Rob loved sports. At around the age of 30, he took up the game of tennis and joined the Boulevard Club. Throughout the decades, his love of the game continued to grow, whether playing the game himself, teaching Cindy to play, cheering her on or watching the professionals. Together he and Cindy travelled to the US Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, Indian Wells, Rome and of course, Toronto. The Boulevard Club has always been a special place for Rob. He wanted to give something back to the Club, so for the past two years, he has given much of his time and expertise to his role as a Director and as Chair of the Governance Committee. As well as travelling to watch tennis, Rob loved to explore the back streets of European cities. His favourite was always Rome and it would be surprising if there was a street in Rome that Rob had not walked. But his most favourite place to spend time was Longboat Key, Florida. There he loved to spend his days playing tennis, walking the beach, visiting the Mote where a brick with his name can be found, and eating grouper at Mar Vista. Rob always was an avid student of history. His knowledge was vast. Books about the wars, Churchill, Cromwell were read and re-read. He could never let go of a historical hardcover book, and over the years, his collection has become quite substantial. There is no doubt that Coco and Charlie, his two beloved chocolate labs, have been waiting for him on the Rainbow Bridge. Rob has missed them every day they have been gone. But now they can be together once again. We wish them long, happy walks in the sunshine. Sincere thanks to Toronto Western Hospital Palliative Care, Drs. Jalal Ebrahim and Suraj Tandon, for their gentle care and compassion shown to Rob and his family. A service will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Turner & Porter, 2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto M6S 1P4. A reception will immediately follow the service at The Boulevard Club, 1491 Lakeshore Road West. In lieu of flowers, we know Rob would love to have donations made to his two favourite charities: Lab Rescue, Oakville and The Salvation Army.
