Robert COCHRANE Obituary

ROBERT CAMERON COCHRANE September 5, 1928 - September 11, 2022 Cameron passed peacefully early Sunday morning in hospital. He leaves his beloved wife of 70 years, Margaret Ann; his children, Susan (Jim), Sally (Patrick), Robert, Nigel (Fiona); his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Genevieve (Jimmy), Kaitlyn (Roddy), Christopher (Kumiko), Dylan, Sam and Hunter; and his great-grandchildren, Owen and Imogen. Cameron was born the son of British medical missionaries in Kalimpong, India, where his father was a world leader in the care of those suffering with Leprosy. He attended Christ's Hospital School in England and obtained his medical degree from the University of London. Cameron and Margaret left the UK in 1957 immigrating to Canada where he completed his psychiatry training from the University of Toronto in 1962. He went on to practice at both the Queen Street Mental Health Centre and the Clarke Institute, Women's College Hospital, Peterborough Health Centre and Northumberland County. Cameron's interests were many, but perhaps his most abiding passion was sailing, or more specifically racing, on Lake Ontario. He and "the boys" were longtime members of Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club where they were considered the boat to beat! Cameron was an avid gardener, growing his beloved zinnias from seed each year and his love for butterflies was legendary, stemming from his rambles in the English countryside as a schoolboy. In his final days he had the joy of watching a monarch at the very moment it hatched from its chrysalis before briefly landing on his hand. Cameron's dry wit, intellect and well of historical knowledge continually amused and amazed his family and friends. He had an answer to every question and he was usually always right! A special thank you to Dr. Bayer and the caring staff at Landmark and Extendicare Cobourg, Northumberland Hills Hospital and the Palliative Care Unit. In honour of Cameron, donations will be gratefully accepted to St. Peter's Church, Cobourg or The Butterflyway Project (David Suzuki Foundation). Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.

My sincere condolences to all the Cochrane family. I will always remember Double Overhead Cam in his glory on the Rikki Tikki Tavi. He was a wonderful mentor and a true gift to those of us who had the pleasure of learning to race with Cam. His memory will always be a blessing.
