Robert HAMPSON Obituary

ROBERT STEPHEN HAMPSON Died November 24, 2021, ten days prior to his 96th birthday at the North Shore Hospice in Vancouver from complications of a severe infection. Devoted husband of Roberta (née Begbie) for 59 years. Predeceased by his parents, Robert and Beatrice (née Cantlie) and his older brother, George (Eve). Loving uncle of Fen Hampson, Beatrice Hampson (Duncan, Charlotte and Malcolm George) and Philip Hampson (Sarah, Robert and James); Farah, Mathew and James Begbie; Fred, Chad, Shaun and Patricia Pattenden; Carol, Christine and Julie Fontaine; Debbie Hunt and Elizabeth Beaulieu. He will be fondly remembered by cousins, Christopher Hampson, Daphne Hampson, and Hugh Stewart. Robert ("Bob") was born in Montreal December 4, 1925. He attended Selwyn House, Bishops College School and Royal Roads. Bob followed his older brother into the Navy as soon as he was of age in 1943, trained at the Royal Canadian Naval College, was commissioned as Sub-Lieutenant (Act.) in 1945 and served on destroyers until he was discharged in 1946. Following his naval service, Bob worked in the insurance industry for almost 50 years, initially for Robert Hampson & Sons and then as a senior executive for a number of major firms until he retired. It should be noted that he had the highest score the year he wrote the Insurance Institute of Canada exam and he also qualified with the U.K. Chartered Insurance Institute. Bob worked in Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver during his career and moved to Vancouver permanently in 1983. He was an excellent golfer, an avid skier and mountain biker. He was skiing powder at Whistler into his 80s and did not permanently dismount from his bike until he was 93. Many thanks to the very kind and diligent staff at the Lionsgate Hospital and the North Shore Hospice who attended to Bob during his recent illnesses. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the North Shore Hospice, the Lionsgate Hospital Foundation or to the charity of your choice, as Bob was generous and donated to many. Condolences can be sent via the Hollyburn Funeral Home website www.hollyburnfunerals.com. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
