Robert HANDY Obituary

Robert "Bob" Lloyd Howard Handy (97) of Etobicoke, Ontario, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2024, at Mississauga Hospital. Bob had recently celebrated his 97th birthday – on December 26th – he was born to Howard and Sophie (Little) Handy in 1926, living in Alliston and then Barrie, Ontario, before moving to the Toronto area to attend university. The family "joke" was no one could ever forget his birthday – the day after Christmas!! Bob is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lorraine; his daughters, Lynda and Carol (Kosick); son-in- law, Ray; and his grandson, Anthony. Bob was a chemical engineer, graduating from the University of Toronto in 1949. He began working at Worthington – Dresser, and remained with the company until his retirement. Aside from his love of family, Bob constantly gave of himself to others. He volunteered after his retirement for Canadian Executive Services Overseas (CESO) – accepting roles in Romania and Slovakia with the federal government. He was an active volunteer for the Red Cross for over 25 years – with Meals on Wheels – something he loved. Bob had a wonderful life with his family – he loved the cottage at Thunder Bay Beach – playing tennis, waterskiing and sailing. He loved playing and watching sports, but none more than the Blue Jays, Leafs and of course - tennis!! He and Lorraine had many adventures, including wine tours to various destinations in Europe and annual trips to Florida. Those who knew Bob even briefly will remember him for his infectious laugh, his interest and love of people, generosity and compassion for others. He loved spending time with his family and was always ready to take on a crossword puzzle with his grandson. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to the Red Cross in Bob's name.

Dear Lorraine and family,
We were saddened to hear about Bob's recent passing. He was a formidable tennis player, excelling against men 20 years younger than he. We will always treasure our annual Christmas season dinners at the Islington Golf and Country Club and the spirited lunches we shared discussing everything from sports to politics. He was a true gentleman.
Rest in peace old buddy.

Such a dear friend from our cottage days at Thunder Beach. Bob´s kindness and warmth touched everyone, especially Peg and Lou Christie. He was central to our time at the beach growing up. I´ll forever treasure the image of Bob and Lorraine gracefully water skiing on the glassy lake after dinner. Lynda, your dad will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. He would always stop to greet me and ask how I was doing- and would offer a kind, supportive word. He was a prince of a man. Warmly, Kelly.

Lorraine, Lynda and Carol, our heartfelt sense of loss in learning of Bob´s passing. I was in my teenage years working with Lynda as a counselor at the cottage when I had the pleasure of spending so with time with "Mr. Handy." He always made me feel at home with his kindness and gentleness.

Our condolences to you Lorraine, and to Linda and Carol. Our visits with Bob and you at the cottage were always such a treat for us: I love how his infectious laugh is mentioned.
