Robert KAVANAGH Obituary

DR. ROBERT JOHN KAVANAGH Dr. Robert John Kavanagh passed away at age 91 at the Elizabeth Bruyère Hospital in Ottawa on June 3, 2023. Bob Kavanagh was born in Hampshire, England and immigrated to Canada to attend the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton as an Electrical Engineering student. After graduating in 1953, he completed Masters and PhD degrees at the University of Toronto and post-doctoral studies at Imperial College, London. He taught at the University of Toronto and then, returning to New Brunswick, taught Electrical Engineering at UNB. He later served as Dean of Graduate Studies and Acting Vice-President, Academic. In the mid-1980s, he moved to Ottawa to work for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. Throughout his career, he served on numerous university, national and international committees, as well as in several advisory roles. Dear father of Judy (Don Haines) and Steve (Randa Sabbagh); and partner to Rhoda Waldon. Predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Millicent (née McRae), whom he met on an ocean liner crossing the Atlantic. He would later spend many summer vacations by her side at her favourite place in the world, the Muskoka cottage built by her grandmother. He will be remembered for his enthusiasm for his amateur radio hobby, vegetable gardening and genealogical research. He helped many aspiring radio enthusiasts in the Ottawa area to get started in his favourite hobby. As was Bob's wish, no funeral will be held. However, a gathering to celebrate his life may be held later this year. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at the Ottawa Civic and Elizabeth Bruyère Hospitals for their palliative care.

At a list server for the University of New Brunswick´s Amateur Radio Club, I posted the following:

I report this sad news that Dr. Robert Kavanagh, VE3OSZ, is a silent key. An obituary is at:

Bob was an early member of the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Amateur Radio Club. Some images of Bob, as an undergraduate student, from the year 1952, are posted at:
https://www.unb.ca/initiatives/ar/ve9unb/history/index.html

In 2019, I had the pleasure of meeting Bob at his home in Ottawa. One of his stories was about when he was an undergraduate student at UNB. He lived in the Beaverbrook Residence, on the top floor. He ran an antenna out of his window, for the 160 m band! The antenna ran over the road, now called Dineen Drive, up the Hill toward the Old Arts Building, now called Howard Douglas Hall. He had a big smile when he told me that story, knowing how hard it would be to do that today on a university campus.

Through our emails, I learned first-hand of Bob´s generosity with his time and knowledge. In my brief visit in 2019, I came to realize that he was also financially generous to UNB, even though no numbers were mentioned.

He was highly respected by my own Ph.D. supervisor, who took Bob´s undergraduate course in control theory at the University of Toronto.

In our brief interactions over the past few years, it has been pleasure to know Bob and I miss him. For the people who knew him well, his family and friends, I offer my condolences.

Brent Petersen, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of New Brunswick.

Although I never had the opportunity to meet Dr. Kavanagh, I remember his signature on the NSERC scholarship cheques that were so important for graduate studies. I wish Steve (whom I had the opportunity to work with at COM DEV all those years ago) and the family many happy memories of Dr. Kavanagh to make them smile during this period of mourning.
