Robert MITCHELL Obituary

MITCHELL, Dr. Robert Ian, F.R.C.S. (C), F.R.A.C.S., F.R.C.S., F.A.C.S., F.C.C.P.
On Wednesday, February 13, 2002. A life of integrity, achievement and conviction. He leaves daughters Eliza, Emma, Sarah, and Serena, sons Garfield and Mark, son-in-law Charles Adamo, grandchildren Charlotte, Thomas and Wesley, numerous nephews, nieces, in-laws and wonderful friends. In death he is reunited with his adored wife Barbara (née Weston), his dear mother Lilian Coram Mitchell, his beloved brother William Douglas Mitchell, and his great friend Geoff Cutler. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, graduate of the Sydney Church of England Grammar School (;Shore;) and Sydney University Medical School, postgraduate training in Australia, England and the U.S. Thoracic and general surgeon, Wellesley Hospital (1960-83), Associate Professor, Department of Surgery, University of Toronto (1960-82). Served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Eye Research Institute of Canada, a Director, George Weston Limited, Senior Surgeon, Chief of Thoracic Surgery and Trustee, Wellesley Hospital. Bob and Barbara were married in London and Cannes, and lived in New York and Sydney before settling in Toronto for many happy years with family and friends. Bob was a man of action, a gentleman, and a surgeon's surgeon, setting rigorous standards for himself and those around him. Superbly skilled yet unfailingly modest, he is most remembered for his warmth and concern for others. He was idealistic and unafraid to challenge the status quo. A tireless crusader against smoking, socialism, and mediocrity in all its forms, Bob took particular pleasure in a tough game of tennis, a good joke, a welltrimmed hedge, and bright, straightforward people. He was the kind of father he had never had: loving, protective, and involved. Even in illness he remained true to himself, courteous, affectionate, determined, and a great dancer. His life inspires us, his love sustains us. The family extends its appreciation to the staff of Taylor Place and Belmont House. Instead of flowers, friends may wish to make a donation to a local chapter of Big Brothers. Memorial Service will be held at home for family and friends promptly at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 20, 2002. Arrangements under the direction of the Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles Chapel.
