MOFFAT, Robert Douglas ('Bob')
June 15, 1926 - June 15, 2015.
Bob passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack while spending his 89th birthday at the cottage on Peninsula Lake, Muskoka. He passed away peacefully with loving family by his side.
Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife Margaret Elizabeth (nee Barr) in 2010, his father, Gordon Fraser Baird Moffat in 1945 and his mother, Olive Felman (nee Master) in 1994.
Bob was a loving father to his three children: Janet Elizabeth Matthews (Rick) of Canmore, Alberta, Robert Gordon Moffat (Lee) of Calgary, Alberta and Catherine Anne Moffat (Rudy Koehler) of Toronto, Ontario. Grandfather to Andrew Matthews (Amanda Robertson) of Calgary, Robert and Stuart Moffat of Calgary and Simon and Matthew Koehler of Toronto. Bob leaves two sisters, Flora Crompton Moffat Renaud of Guelph, Ontario and Carol Ann Guin of Galiano Island, B. C. plus numerous cousins.
Bob attended High School at Pickering College, Ontario, before joining the Navy in 1944 at the age of 18. Returning from the war, Bob attended McGill University and then followed a career in education. Married in 1947, Bob and Margaret led an adventurous life with international postings in Pakistan and Kenya, before permanently settling in Toronto.
A focal point in his and the families' life was the 5th generation cottage, Rothesay, on Peninsula Lake, which he enjoyed until the end of his life. He wrote a book 'The Moffats of Weston' and co-authored two books Penlake and Penlake II.
He enjoyed playing sports, including varsity basketball at McGill, interclub squash at the Toronto Cricket Club, skiing at Craigleith and was a leading force in establishing the Albacore sailing club at the cottage. He continued his active life with tennis and golf into his early 80's and loved the outdoors.
He shared lots of laughs, travel adventures and was a kindred spirit with Margaret, his wife of 62 years. He was a friend to everyone he met, always a gentlemen and a loyal friend. He had a quick wit, loved to laugh and could engage an audience with his numerous recitals of poetry and literature. He was a guiding light to his children and a source of encouragement to many.
Dad, we love you and will remain always in our hearts. You had a kind spirit, loving heart and a curious mind. Go in Peace.
A celebration of life will be held at the Toronto Cricket Club, 141 Wilson Avenue, Toronto from 2-5 p.m. on Monday, June 22, 2015.
