Robert MURDIE Obituary

Robert "Bob" Murdie passed away peacefully at home with his wife Wendy close at his side. He is survived by his beloved wife, his daughters Susan (Ian Brereton) and Heather (Sean McKenna), and five grandchildren Jakob, Kaiya, Amy, Nathan, and Emily, who always brought a smile to his face. He will be sorely missed by family and friends. Born in Toronto and raised in Kitchener, Bob completed his undergraduate degree in Geography at Waterloo Lutheran University. After completing his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Chicago he began teaching in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Waterloo. In 1969, Bob moved to Toronto and joined the Geography Department at York University as an Urban Geographer where he remained until his retirement. His research in social housing and immigration provided insight into the immigrant housing experience in Canada and the challenges experienced by newcomers. These research interests led him to travel to various cities in Europe and to spend time as a Guest Researcher in Sweden and Amsterdam. Making good friends around the world, he was well respected and appreciated by both colleagues and students. Mentoring and encouraging his graduate students was something he especially enjoyed. During retirement he spent time travelling and at the family cottage at Point Clark. He enjoyed talking politics at any level but was particularly passionate about municipal politics. After numerous medical struggles over the past several years Bob is now at peace. The family is grateful for the support and assistance of all the PSW's from SPRINT and other agencies over the past two years, as well as the Palliative Care team from Temmy Latner in the last few weeks. Following cremation, there will be a private family interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. If desired, donations in his memory can be made to The Woodgreen Foundation (woodgreen.org), SPRINT Senior Care (sprintseniorcare.org), The Temmy Latner Centre (tlcpc.org) or a Charity of Your Choice. Condolences may be sent to www.humphreymiles.com.

It is with great sadness that I learned about the passing of our dear colleague Professor Bob Murdie. I remember his kindness and generosity when I first joined the Department of Geography at York University and our wonderful conversations over the years before he retired. I remember the twinkle in his eyes and his sense of humour - always making everyone smile. I remember learning so much from his rich scholarship especially his perspectives on the social geography of Toronto, questions on equity and social justice, the struggles for affordable housing and challenges in immigration policy. I remember the genuine interest he took in all his colleagues, students and friends and making our department a welcoming and collegial space for everyone. He will be dearly missed. My sincere condolences to his family and close ones. May he rest in peace and strength.

Ranu Basu.

I met Bob through CERIS and found him to be a rare academic in the sense that his knowledge of the field, quiet and gentle demeanour, and total lack of arrogance were all qualities became more and more apparent as you related to him over time. My condolences to his family.

Dear Wendy, Susan, Heather, Ian and Sean,
Joe, Simon, Elizabeth and I are very sad to learn of Bob's death. We remember with enormous gratitude, his warm and generous friendship for so many years. Thanks to Bob's introduction to Point Clark, Lake Huron is now a special place for our family. We all enjoyed Bob's quiet humour and kindness.
Professionally, I learned a lot from his drive for social justice, tremendous knowledge of Canadian cities, and his sustained commitment to teaching and research. He was a great collaborator.
Elizabeth and Simon join Joe and me in sending our deepest sympathies. We hope that soon you will be able to enjoy memories of happy times with him.

It is widely acknowledged that Bob Murdie had few equals in his devotion to his students and his expertise as a mentor and academic advisor. His excellence as a teacher, however, must not be allowed to overshadow the importance of his published research. Bob came on the scene at a time when the field of urban geography was suffering from what can only be described as an excess of conceptual confusion. His work on social and economic indicators within the various neighbourhoods of metropolitan Toronto placed him squarely in the vanguard among those who laboured to bring depth and clarity to our understanding of the spatial dynamics of city growth. Equally valuable are his later contributions regarding the impact of municipal policies upon housing development and immigrant absorption. In short, Bob was an academic all-rounder, notable for outstanding work both in his teaching and in his research. It was an honour to have known him as a professional colleague, and I extend sincere condolences to Wendy and to all members of his family as they mourn his passing. I will always remember Bob with respect and with admiration.

We grew up on Glengrove where the Murdies were our across-the-street neighbours. We babysat for Susan and Heather, with Bob making sure we got home safely at the end of the night. Susan and our mom, Ola, were close friends and so she cared deeply for all the Murdies so we´ve kept track of each other through the years. Our deepest sympathies to Wendy, Susan and Heather and their families.

It was my privilege to be a long-time colleague of Bob at York University. Over many years we shared the teaching of an undergraduate course on Urban Planning. KInd, generous with his time, conscientious-a GOOD man in my book whose decency will be a fine legacy. May he rest in peace. Bryan Massam

Memories of our childhood as we spent summers and holidays together. What carefree days and freedom we enjoyed.
As timed passed we were all so proud of your academic success..
and your work ethics. Our most treasured holiday was to Norway with you and Wendy, and as the midnight sun set briefly you read to us the history of places we sailed by.
May your spirit fly high.
You are now again free.. Donna Roy and family

It was my great privilege to be one of Bob´s colleagues at York University for over 50 years. He was a wonderful friend, a keen researcher, and a superb teacher. He enriched the lives of thousands of undergraduate and graduate students in the Geography Department. His wisdom and enthusiastic contribution to decision-making within the Department were invaluable. A dedicated family man, Bob served as a conscientious model for his friends and colleagues; and he will be greatly missed.
