Robert NOAKES Obituary

Robert William Noakes It is with profound sadness that we announce our brother, uncle, great uncle and friend Robert (Bob, Bobby) Noakes passing after a lengthy illness on the morning of February 13, 2024. Robert leaves behind his sister Gloria Hugo (George) brother Peter Noakes (Katharina) and sister Judy Gardner (Cameron) as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Robert was born in Toronto on November 30th, 1946 to his now predeceased parents Charles and Jean Noakes. Robert was a leading national and international professional designer with a career spanning more than 50 years. In 1970 he established Robert Noakes Design in a small coach house just off Avenue Rd. and Pears Ave. As business expanded he and Steven Cohen created a partnership and moved to Cumberland and Bay. Robert then again went out on his own setting up operations from his most recent showroom and offices located on Davenport and Avenue Rd. under the banner Robert Noakes International Ltd. His extensive research, insight and travels brought wonderful art, furniture, fabrics and much more to his showroom in Toronto. He had an impactful talent that incorporated many different styles from the traditional to the modern. He was a master of incorporating timeless, quality pieces in many of his clients projects in Toronto, New York, London, France and Switzerland. Robert had a particular passion for art and created a substantial collection of Canadian and international work. He loved to attend London and Broadway plays and gallery and auctions in Paris, London and New York. Summers were spent at his cottage at Cedar Point on Georgian Bay where he enjoyed leisurely time on the porch and patio, working in his garden and playing cards with family and friends. It was where he went to 'cool off' in a quiet, beautiful place enjoying his family playing on the beach. Our thanks to the caring staff at Princess Margret Hospital, Bridge Point Hospital. the Toronto General Hospital and SRT Med/Staff. Special thanks to Jordan and Mila for their loving care at Robert's home and TGH. In particular, the family would like to thank his nephew Blair Abernethy and his wife Caroline for their amazing care for Robert during his long illness. A memorial will be held Thursday February 22, 2024 at Humphrey Funeral Home, A.W. Miles-Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Ave (south of Davisville), Toronto at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception. The family would ask you to remember a remarkable man who left the world a more creative and beautiful place. In leu if flowers we ask for donations to https://georgianbayforever.org/

So sorry to hear the news of Bob´s death.
I lived around the corner when we both attended ECI. Bob was a fixture in the school musicals.
I often stopped by for a coffee when he had the Noakes Cohen showroom.
Bob was always the most debonair personality in the room.

I remember how beautiful Bobby´s sister Gloria was and she modelled in the Liberty Magazine for my brother-in-law´s furniture company.

Bob was in my class at Etobicoke Collegiate where we both shared interests in art and the school plays. Pictured is a 1964 production of Best Foot Forward, left to right: me, Peter Stewart, Julianne Jardine, Paul Jarvis, and Bob.
I visited his coach house on Pears Avenue and remembered his creative barnboard wall with shiny construction insulation between the boards. Its reflectiion simulated daylight peaking through and was and brilliant. I've copied his trick in all three houses I've lived in. He was a bright light. RIP

This picture of Bobby on the porch of my house was on the first roll of film I shot with my first camera in May 1960. We were both 13 at the time.

We, a great vibrant Gang of us, entrepreneurial excited pals, all keen in life and work in the blessed freedom of those decades, 70s, 80s, 90s, where we all admired and supported each other with great gusto. Bobby as one of the most delightful stylish of men, will always take precedence with love and laughter and a most endearing kindness.. a most remarkable generous man I am so grateful to have known...my sympathies to his Family and thanks for the opportunity to gather ...

My wife just told me of Robert's passing. I'm a little in shock. We became friends when I was five years old and my family moved onto Deloraine. We were close for a number of years and were always glad to run into each other later on. My condolences to Judy, Peter and Gloria and all of their family members. He was really a unique individual with a great sense of style and humour.

My sincere condolences to the Noakes family.
What a beautiful picture of Bobby in the Globe. Handsome and impeccably dressed.
I knew Bobby since childhood at Thunder Beach and then reconnected in Yorkville in the eighties.
Noakes Cohen had designed the chic restaurant that I was working in. It had white marble, heavy brass, smoked mirrors and etched glass.
When I asked Bobby where he got the marble tables from he told me they were from the washrooms in the New York City subway. True or not that was Bobby´s wicked sense of humour.
May he rest in peace.
