I had met Robert briefly in, I guess the eighties, at the National Club, where I was a waiter and he was a patron. I was bold enough to introduce myself because I knew he knew my father (John C. Aitken). Some forty years later, in early March 2020, I had dream about searching for Robert, in Toronto, with the imperative of sharing my Christian faith with him. I've never had such an experience. I found a contact for Robert at Faskin, and they passed my number to him. He called me at the end of March 2020 and we had a nice long chat. Mostly about William Shaw (my uncle) and Jack Butler (also my uncle). I later learned that these three (and four others) were such fast friends, they called themselves The Group of Seven. It was a lovely chat, and, yes, I shared my faith with him. Just today I called him and left a voice message. Hildegard called back and left me a voice message that Robert passed away last month (11.Apr.2021). I'm happy for the two times we crossed paths.

I knew Robert during the short time I was in Toronto in the early 1970s and we quickly became good friends.
He had the ability to make detailed business meetings enjoyable! and he was always great company. I was delighted Robert and Hildegard were both able to visit us in Devon, England, and most recently in Bristol. Had I known about Robert's Donald Sutherland friendship I would have mentioned that Donald made an Agatha Christie film at our Devon house a some years before their visit; small world! The tree Robert planted has flowered well this year and will, no doubt, continue to do so for very many years to come.
I shall miss the thought of him being with us.
Joan and I send our condolences to Hildegard and the family.

Robert was a true gentleman and a constant positive influence throughout my entire legal career at Fasken. He was a great friend and mentor. Truly remarkable and inspiring. He never tired of wanting to try or to learn about new things. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to Hildegard and the extended family.

It was almost 50 years ago that Robert became my mentor and teacher while I articled at Fasken & Calvin. I was a brash and impatient 24 year old, recently graduated from law school. Robert quickly taught me that I had much to learn. He taught me how to draft legal documents. He taught me how to interact with clients and other professionals. He taught me that there was a rewarding life to be lived outside the law practice. And he taught me that a career in law was an unending learning exercise. There was a certain irony that my mentor, 16 years my senior, would still be practicing law when I retired 8 years ago.

It was a great pleasure to know Robert for the last 20 years of his remarkable life He was a man of impressive intellect and curiosity, balanced perfectly with a warm and genuine nature and an irrepressible twinkle.
He was a rare gem of the golden age of law in Canada and will be remembered fondly by all who had the great pleasure to work (and play) with him.
Bless him.

Robert was the 'rock' around which De Beers Canada was both formed, and later prospered. Personally, I have only good memories of my times with Robert away from the office, be it on the golf course, in the front row watching the Maple Leafs, or in countless restaurants along Yonge Street. A great man.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Shirriff for the first time in 2016. I was a first year undergraduate student at the time and reached out to Mr. Shirriff for career advice. Mr. Shirriff is the reason I chose to pursue a legal career. He was incredibly kind and thoughtful. I will remember him fondly. My condolences to his family.

Robert and his late brother John were the last of a generation of Toronto Shirriffs born in approximately the first three decades of the 20th century. They were elegant gentlemen and never failed to attend and support family funerals, weddings and other events and there were many of them. Robert, John, Hildegard and Sheila attended my late fathers funeral a few years ago and we were much comforted by their presence.
My sincere condolences to Hildegard and Robert's family.
