Robert SLOAN Obituary

ROBERT JOHN SLOAN Robert John Sloan (Rob to friends) died the morning of January 29, 2022, with his family by his side, after a yearlong battle with cancer. During this challenging time, he also endured the loss of his wife of 36 years, Mary Jane Woods, in September 2021. No couple was more loving and devoted. Rob was born December 24, 1956 (the day before his wife) in the Weston neighbourhood of Toronto, the third of five children to Warren and Barbara Sloan (née McIntyre). He met his future wife when they were high school students working at Loblaws, and their relationship survived and thrived through her own health struggles. Rob spent the first half of his career in marketing at Connaught Laboratories (now part of Sanofi) in positions that had him travelling the world and meeting colleagues who became lifelong friends. In 2004, Rob returned to his first love of teaching, joining the faculty at Conestoga College in Kitchener as a professor of marketing. Right up to his retirement in December, he remained excited by new ways of teaching, and enjoyed watching his students prosper. In a note written shortly before his passing, Rob said, 'I've been a very lucky man with a loving wife and son, wonderful friends and a couple of rewarding careers. Who am I to complain?' He is survived by three siblings, his son Will, and Will's partner Dancy. Rob's family will receive relatives and friends from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. Guests are required to RSVP to attend the visitations and service through the funeral home website or by calling. Those who are unable to attend the service are invited to join the family via livestream at 11:00 a.m. with a video tribute beginning at 10:45 a.m. at https://www.henrywalser.com/live-streaming. Interment to be held at Mount Hope Catholic Cemetery, 305 Erskine Ave., Toronto on Wednesday, February 2, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. Visit www.henrywalser.com for Rob's memorial.

Rob was the first senior Colleague I worked with at Conestoga College as a new Professor in Canada. He gave me all the support I needed. he prepared an achy-file that contained all the materials I needed to teach my students. The transition was so smooth for me. Rob will be sorely missed. Rest in the bossom of the Lord.

Rob was one of my favourite persons of all times. Although it has been many years since we worked together, my memories of my interactions with Rob are as clear as day. He left an unforgettable impression on those he was with through is unfailing smile, his eternal optimism, his gentle kindness and his devotion to his loved ones. He was by far the greater man but treated myself and everyone else with humility and respect. He had a personality that was infectious, that left one wanting to emulate him. So much so that even though we knew each other only briefly, his loss pains me deeply. So glad to have known you, Rob. You made life better for all of us who knew you.

Rob was the best of us! His love of the arts, music, literature and theatre was infused in everything he said and did. His love of learning inspired us. He was simply the best! Those of us blessed to have interacted with him will never forget him. He was a role model, an inspiration, living each day to be the best version of himself. His knock knock jokes , his words of support and his hugs will be dearly missed! Peace and love Rob!

Rob was my favourite professor from my time at Conestoga, he always had a big smile on his face when we came into class and was one of the happiest and joyful professors I´ve ever had. I was lucky enough to have Rob for multiple classes and when I graduated he was the first person to shake my hand after I walked off stage, which is a memory I will always cherish. My thoughts are with Rob´s friends and family, and I hope they take pride in knowing how many lives he has impacted through his career. Sending my love and condolences.

Rob was of the most loving and caring teachers we had at Conestoga. I cannot forget every International marketing class that we would arrive and find Rob playing songs for us. He will be missed by many. Rob was the only one who put together a final event to wrap up the course and I remember we had lunch together as a team. He also managed to come up is rewards for his millennial student, like he always referred to us.

I do wish Will, his son, and Rob's family and friends my condolences.

Cris.

It is with great sadness that my wife Libby and I learned of Rob´s death and of the death of Mary Jane only a few months ago.
They were wonderful people. I had not seen Rob since our years working
together But I thought of him often. He
was a fine man and it was a
pleasure to have called him
a friend.

Rob's class was certainly the one I looked most forward to during my first year of college. His optimism was contagious and he was always willing to go above and beyond to help his students.
The memories I have from his class will be cherished for my lifetime.
My deepest condolences are with his family and friends during this time of grieving.

Extending my deepest condolences to Rob´s family, thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

I also want to express my gratitude for what Rob brought to me and my fellow classmates. No one cheered louder for the success of their students - both while in his class and in post-grad careers. It was very touching and motivating to have someone like that in your corner. In my co-op summer semester - when most faculty were on vaca - I was fortunate to have Rob for nearly every class. It was a great chance to learn from his experience. Anyone can teach marketing principles but Rob gave insight about what working in the field was actually like, the types of opportunities and how to get there. Thanks, Rob, for caring so much.
