Robert SMITH Obituary

ROBERT THOMAS SMITH June 1, 1943 January 23, 2022 Robert (Bob) Thomas Smith passed away peacefully at Hilltop House in Squamish, BC on a sunny winter's day. Husband, father, grandfather and adventurer Bob had a great love and appetite for a life well-lived. He passed 'gently into that good night' after a long battle with dementia and heart disease. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, his children Caitlin, Laura and Jason and his grandchildren Amelia, Jack, Augustin, June and James. Bob was born in Vancouver, BC to Margaret McFarlane (deceased) and Donald Smith (deceased), had a sister Donna (Laughton) and grew up in Victoria, BC. After some colourful teenage years he found his professional purpose studying mathematics, first at the University of Victoria and then postgrad at the University of Toronto. He passed his actuarial exams while at Manulife in Toronto and after marrying Kathleen in 1979 they moved to Vancouver, BC. He worked at Fidelity/Seaboard Life and obtained his MBA from the University of British Columbia. He eventually became president of Seaboard Life Insurance and held this position until the company was sold. Bob consulted for William Mercer Ltd. for a few years before moving on in his semi-retirement to various board positions with Healthcare Benefit Trust, Worksafe BC and BCAA. He obtained his Directors College designation and INSEAD designation during this time. He and Kathleen retired from Vancouver to Whistler, BC where he was an active volunteer with Whistler Blackcomb Mountain and the Rotary Club. He greatly enjoyed his skiing, photography, woodworking, bridge, golfing, hiking, reading and music. Bob never stopped being curious about the world he lived in and he took great pleasure in traveling whenever he could, photographing special moments both on land and in the ocean while meeting many people in the course of these travels. Bob's columbarium niche will be located in the forest in the Whistler Cemetery and a celebration of his life will be held later in the year when the weather permits. There is a memorial page for Bob on the Squamish Funeral Chapel website. Words cannot express our deep gratitude to Dr. Gornall, Dr. Millar and the wonderful healthcare staff and volunteers at Hilltop House in Squamish, BC. They were there for us every step of the way with their dedication, love and support especially during the last two years and the challenges of Covid. We ask all the friends and organizations whose lives were touched professionally or personally by Bob to consider donating to the Hilltop House Support Society in lieu of flowers. Your donation will allow these good people to continue their outstanding work in helping other residents lead meaningful lives despite their health challenges.

Hi Kathy,
I'm so sorry that I missed this.
I retired from SF, 2 years ago and have since moved away to the Kootenays.
Bob was one of those few men, I would call the ultimate gentleman.
Always kind, considerate, quick witted, so funny and of course we bonded talking about skiing.
He holds a good memory in my
heart.
Love always,
Lindsie Nicholson

Kathy and family, I am so shocked to hear of Bob's passing. I'm so deeply sorry for your loss.
Bob was one of my favourite people who really made a difference in my career. I was his secretary at Seaboard Life and he treated me so well and we made a good team. That didn't last long as he helped me move to the IT group in the organization to further my career.

I remember we went to Fort Wayne, Indiana on a business trip and we had to run to catch the next plane in the Chicago O'Hare airport - it took everything I had to keep up with him!

I will never forget his humor, honesty and respectful 'tell it like it is' way, I learned so much from him.

Wishing you all much love, warmth and peace. Bob made such a positive impact on many, many people in his life.

Sorry to hear of Bob´s passing. Sincere condolences Kathy, Jason, Laura and Caitlin. I had the pleasure of meeting Bob through my brother-in-law Lorne and my sister Cathy. Cathy, Bob and I shared a wonderful sunny ski day together. Blue bird skies, wonderful snow - and few rather harrowing runs. Bob was 70 at the time!
Bob´s smile was transformative - his entire face lightened and then when he laughed your heart lightened.
Whenever I hear Margarietaville by Jimmy Buffett I´ll think of Bob and smile

Sorry to hear of Bob's passing. Condolences to all the Family. Got to know Bob during my working days at Manulife 1969 - 1972. Remember a time camping on his Island property near Parry Sound with other friends and colleagues as well as other good times during those years.

Heartfelt condolences Kathy, Jason, Laura and Caitlin - we have all lost someone very special.

In one word, polymath describes Bob. I count him as my first pal in my new country - Canada, and I shall cherish our decades of friendship for the rest of my own life. So many people remember his dedication to family, his business acumen, his thrill of the outdoors, his tireless volunteerism. But let's not forget his brilliance as a skilled craftsman, flair with a Nikon camera (underwater or in his darkroom), appreciation of The Arts, whether opera, symphony, the latest movie or...... Pink Floyd (remember the 351 Hillsdale stereo system!!), enjoyment of games (will it be backgammon or Settlers of Catan tonight - perchance another frame of snooker in the Smith dream home) and, last but far from least, his wry sense of humour. One more word to memorialize The Inspirational Shoeless Bob - integrity. RIP my old sparring partner.

Worked with Bob at Fidelity/Seaboard during such fun times...came with us on different incentive trips (that I planned/coordinated). Thank you Bob for all those great, wonderful, fun, intellictual conversation years....in the pubs, on the trips and in the office. Never one to bother with small talk, he got right to the gist of things and with an amazing sense of humour. Sorry he's gone....Loved working for him, with him. Hi to Kathy....hope you are well. Cheers. Karen
