Robert STONE Obituary

Quietly, after a cardiac event, our beloved husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather, Bob, passed peacefully, on April 26, 2024. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Stone (nee Morrison); children, Michael (Jom), Julie (Gerrit), Jennie (Jeffrey) and Jason (Katie) Stone; and was predeceased by his oldest son, Paul (Natalie). He loved his six grandchildren, Shannon, Connor, Oscar, Edie, Chloe, and Iris; and his two great-granddaughters, Teagan and Rory. Robert Martin Stone was born on December 7, 1940, to Mildred and Martin Stone in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He was the oldest of six children, and is survived by his best friend and brother, Bill (Darlene), Maryanne (Roberto), Stephen (Debbie), John Paul (Susanne) and Mark (Chris). The family eventually settled near Elmvale, Ontario, where their farm became a social centre for their extended family. He had a very illustrious career after graduating from medical school at Queen's University in 1964. Following his start at the Toronto General Hospital, he became the Surgeon-in Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital. He went on to serve as Surgeon-in-Chief at the Toronto Western Hospital and from 1993-2006, he was the Head of the Department of Surgery at Dalhousie University, where he became Professor Emeritus upon retirement. His many accolades include several awards for his excellence in teaching. He was the Vice President of Education at the Toronto Hospital and Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. His guidance and support of students from medical school to post-graduate fellowship have been long celebrated. All remember the 'Stone-look' over his bifocals that molded the medical experts of today. His acumen and support for research shaped medical education and innovation. Bob's insight, warmth, sense of humor, empathy, and ability to never lose 'the common touch' was what made him the remarkable and special man we love so dearly. His passing leaves an enormous hole in our hearts, and he will truly be missed by all who knew him. A funeral service will be held this Saturday, May 4th, at the Lynn-Stone Funeral Home, 15 Yonge St. S., Elmvale, at 1 p.m. Interment, St. Patrick's Cemetery, Phelpston. In remembrance of Bob's life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the University Health Network. Bob and Mary were very good friends to us during our time together in Halifax. Dalhousie surgery had an extraordinary opportunity to lead Canada and world in several areas during Bob´s tenure as head. Later when I returned on visits, I enjoyed many breakfasts with Bob in Smitty´s when we solved all the world´s problems. Our deepest condolences to Mary.

I was saddened to hear of Bob's passing and I offer my deepest condolences to Bob's family. I had the privilege of working with Bob when he headed the Dalhousie Department of Surgery and he quickly became a wonderful colleague, confidant and good friend. I remember fondly his wisdom, humour and humanity. Bob was a relentless advocate for research as part of a physician's career. His impact on so many within the medical school can not be overstated. Bob made a huge positive difference.

Julie and family: thinking so much of you at this time. Dr. Stone was my introduction to med school - and what an intro it was. Insisting that as first year students we all visit the OR to see open heart surgery - wow - that was an eye opener for sure. And being dedicated enough to attend our end of unit party at my North end apartment - :-). Your dad was a treat. I feel blessed to have had him in my path.

My sincere condolences to the Stone family. Bob leaves a legacy of well trained physicians who in tern will train or influence other young doctors, and on it goes. I first met him when I was a medical student at TGH, and later as a resident at Mt Sinai. A great role model.
