ROBERT WAKEFIELD Obituary

1947 - 2024 Dr. Robert (Bob) Wakefield died peacefully on September 30, 2024 in Vancouver General Hospital where he was receiving care for complications of ALS, which he'd been struggling with for the past few years. Born and raised in B.C., Bob met the love of his life Rosemary Kearns in California while he was studying medicine at Stanford, and they were married in 1971. Their daughter Laura was born in Atlanta, followed by Stephanie in Vancouver three years later. Bob's practice focused on geriatrics, and he also served as Clinical Instructor in the UBC Medical School. He took on leadership roles as Medical Director of the Banfield Extended Care Unit and Medical Director of Residential and Transitional Care for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. Bob retired from practice in 2015. Bob's and Rosemary's extensive garden was Bob's happy place. He will also be remembered as a champion grandfather and uncle, an avid repairman, intrepid Costco bargain-hunter, ingenious do-it-yourselfer and serial gadgeteer. Retirement was also a time of adventure for both Bob and Rosemary when they embarked upon extensive world travels. Bob was predeceased by his brothers John (Nadia) and Bill (Lisa) and leaves his sister Jane Wakefield (Ken Reeder) and his beloved wife Rosemary, along with daughters Laura Ambrozic (Greg) and Stephanie Wakefield. His legacy will continue to be an inspiration to his grandchildren: Laura's daughters, Claire, Lindsay, and Robyn, and Stephanie's son, Nicolas (with dad Dan Petirs). In lieu of flowers, consider supporting the B.C. ALS Society at ALSBC.ca or the work of Banfield Pavilion at VGH, at bit.ly/banfield47. A Celebration of Life to honour Bob will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, January 3, 2025, at Pacific Spirit United Church (formerly Ryerson), in the sanctuary opposite 2195 West 45th Avenue in Vancouver. We know Bob through our extended family and are very saddened to hear that Bob passed away. He was such a lovely man! He was always in a good mood and his family was the foremost factor in his life. He was charming, friendly, good-humored, kind, and a wonderful overall person. He was a dedicated husband, fantastic father to his 2 daughters, and a loving grandfather. He also had a storied and successful career as a medical doctor and he was an excellent fit for the profession that became his calling from an early age. Our memories of Bob are only of the most pleasant variety! While he has passed on, the Wakefield family must know that they will once again see Bob in the future and they once again will all be together. And, at that time, it will be joyous and beautiful....and will then finally last forever. There will come a future day when Bob will never again leave anyone...and vise versa. Until we see each other again, we feel the utmost condolences for an extremely kind, loving, and gentle man. Tom Petirs & Adrienne Crawford

Dear Rosemary ; I was so sorry to read in the newspaper that Bob has passed away. I have such pleasant memories of working with you two to plan some cruising travel adventures
The photo you chose for the Vancouver Sun paper was perfect, as it shows exactly how he appeared to me-----friendly, open and happy !

Bob was one of those special people who was always there to help others in a calm way, with a sense of humour. Being a Geriatrician also interested in Long Term Care, Bob and I worked together over the years, first when he informally mentored me when I became a Geriatrician and then as a colleague who I valued. He touched many people and gave us many good memories. Goodbye Bob xo

On behalf of the Division of General Internal Medicine at Vancouver General Hospital, I would like to offer our sympathies to Bob's family on his recent death.

Bob was a valued member of the Division of General Internal Medicine and the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. He was a well-liked and affable member of the Division who contributed to its growth and who was a strong advocate for general internal medicine at local and provincial levels.

Bob was a valued colleague, teacher and clinician who deeply cared for his patients and students. His legacy will remain with those he cared for, worked with and taught.

Bob was a wonderful colleague and friend at VGH. He was an authentic and caring person, modelling for medical learners and other staff how to provide diagnostic excellence at the same time as insightful whole person care to patients. He influenced a whole generation at VGH. I miss him.
