ROBERT WASSERMAN Obituary

Robert passed peacefully at Kensington Hospice. He leaves behind his wife, Sandra Borzush; stepson, Steven Sladkowski; daughter-in-law, Bailey Jensen; and a loving network of extended family and friends. Predeceased by his father, Max; his mother, Helen; and brother, Marty. Robert was a bon vivant whose passion for hospitality and entertaining took him from Sneaky Dee's, to his own restaurant, to private catering and bartending, and finally to Maple Leaf Foods, where he worked for 21 years until retirement. Though his friends and family called him "Chef," he maintained he was simply "a competent home cook". In a final act of humanism, Robert donated his body to the University of Toronto's Willed Body Program. He will be dearly missed. Memorial donations can be made to Kensington Hospice.

Robert (Bob, as I knew him) and I were very good childhood friends when our respective families lived near each other in North Toronto. We were in some of the same classes together starting in grade three at Allenby Public School. Our families would exchange Hannakka and Christmas cards. Whenever I went over to Bob's house Helen and Max would always make me feel welcome. Many times Max would adjust pant length and waist measurements utilizing his tailoring skills. Marty (Moe) would put the latest album on the record player which was located on a stand in the corner of the dinning room. Bob and I would often play ball hockey in his driveway. The driveway was shared with the next door neighbours who happened to be the Nesterenko's. Their son played with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Chicago Black Hawks. Bob and I would always wish that Eric would show up while we were playing in the driveway. I had not spoken with Bob for about sixty years except for the time when my wife and I and our young son visited his bar as we happened to be downtown visiting at a local hospital. We had ice cream and chatted about various things. Several months ago I called him after following him for a brief time on Instagram. We spoke for a short while. Bob told me about his travels and that he learning another language. I could tell Bob was passionate about his community and Toronto in general. I know that he will be dearly missed by his family and friends. My condolences his family and to those who knew Bob.

My deepest condolences Sandra and Steven. I have so many fond memories of coming to your annual Holiday party to chat with you and Robert and the fun times of having you all visit our house in Toronto. My apologies that I couldn“t be there for you in this very difficult time. Take solace in knowing that Robert is in a peaceful place and my thoughts are with you and your family. Robert was a customer at a small restaurant called Combo's in the Annex. When it was time to relocate Sneaky Dee's from Bloor Street to College we needed some investors to help make the deal happen. Robert and Marty stepped up. Both of them even worked there as bartenders. I have many fond memories of the brothers Wasserman. My deepest sympathies.
