Robin HUMPHREYS Obituary

ROBIN PAUL HUMPHREYS, MD, FRCSC On March 18, 2020 Robin left us to join the love of his life, his "bride", Judith Anne. His children Cameron and Jane were at his side as he succumbed to injuries suffered in a fall. Robin was born in Edmonton, Alberta to Jack and "Brownie" Humphreys on October 16, 1937. When he was five, the family moved to Toronto settling into the High Park area where Robin's medical career may have been sparked by his first job as a delivery boy for a local pharmacy, pedaling his cargo bike laden with parcels of medication. Robin attended the local high school, Runnymede Collegiate, where he was a well-rounded student scoring both good grades and baskets, participating in school plays and winning oratorical contests, one of which was a third place finish to the renowned politician and speaker, Stephen Lewis. Unsurprisingly, Robin was valedictorian of his graduating class. In September 1956, Robin's medical journey began in earnest when he entered the Faculty of Medicine at University of Toronto where he was president of the Medical Society and submitted two papers, the first of more than 200 publications authored by Robin during his career. At a faculty event in the late 1950's, Judith Addy was in attendance with a classmate of Robin's. Some months later when Robin heard they were no longer dating, he called Judith to ask her out. Studying for an exam, Judith turned Robin down but added she would like a "raincheck". Robin claimed it was that offer that gave him the courage to call Judith back for their first date. They married in August 1961. Judith carried the load at home and supported the family while Robin continued his medical training, first as a junior intern at St. Michaels followed by six months in pathology at the Banting Institute and six months on a neurosurgery rotation at Toronto General Hospital before beginning an orthopedic residency at the Hospital for Sick Children. But while Robin plugged away in orthopedics, he continued to think about his previous rotation and eventually made the difficult and fateful decision to switch specialties, returning to U of T's neurosurgery training program. In 1970, he became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and one year later was appointed to the Department of Surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children (Sick Kids) training under Dr. E. Bruce Hendrick, the hospital's first full-time neurosurgeon. Robin's mandate at Sick Kids was to take clinical responsibility for the pediatric trauma and cerebrovascular programs, to assist with the development of the department's (and Canada's first) craniofacial team and, to structure the postgraduate educational program for the neurosurgical residents and fellows. He was a full professor at U of T and the inaugural holder of the "Harold J Hoffman/Shoppers Drug Mart Chair in Pediatric Neurosurgery" at the university. At Sick Kids, he was Neurosurgeon-in-Chief from 1996 until his retirement in 2003. Robin was president of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery in 1992 and 1993 and the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery from 1993 to 1994. In rare downtime, Robin and Judith enjoyed vacations at their home in Nevis, travels throughout Europe and the US with friends, jaunts to the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, dinners at favourite restaurants and visits with children and grandchildren at their longtime family home on Lyndhurst Avenue. Robin will be deeply missed by Cameron (Maria Michlits) and Jane (Michael Weir) and his grandchildren Lucas, Mark, Katherine, Penny and Lillian. He also leaves behind his sister Pat (Roy) Brand, niece Megan, nephew Adam and many close friends and extended family. Robin was predeceased by Judith in January of this year. A memorial will be held at a later date. If you wish to honour Robin's life, donations can be made to Sick Kids hospital.

Dr. Humphreys diagnosed me with hydrocephalus and subsequently implanted a ventricle shunt, when I was 22 months old and replaced it when I was four. I remember that my dad always spoke of Dr. Humphreys with a great deal of respect for the way that he always quickly responded to my parents to answer their questions and calm their fears while I was a patient at Sick Kids. I also remember that he always took the time to talk to me, during follow-up appointments. He answered my questions and seemed to take what I had to say seriously, even when I was pretty little. He was really one of a kind. My heart goes out to his family.

Upon reading my medical documentation as a 34 year old woman today, I did not know it was this man who saved my life at the age of 6 months old at The hospital for Sick Children. My mother told me he went to church on the day he had to do my surgery. I am thankful to him and God always and wish I was able to thank him in person. My most condolences to Dr Humphrey's family.

Just was thinking about him and Googled his name. I was unaware of his passing.
My son was born June of 1989 with Spina Bifida/hydrocephalus he was transported to Sick Kids. Dr. Humphreys became his surgeon he closed up his lesion on his back and put a shiny in his brain to drain the fluid on his brain.
We were there several times untill he turned 18. He was the most kind doctor we ever dealt with he had the most amazing bed side manners and you knew he truly cared!
He truly found his calling in this life.
Joshua is 35 now and we could share so many more moments with this wonderful man.
Our condolences to the family. You were so blessed to have him. I know we were.

almost 4 years later and I still think of this angel. In a time when doctors were known to have no bedside manners, Dr. Humphreys was a knight in shining armour with the sweet mannerisms of a father we all needed. He saved my life, literally. Called me a walking miracle.....and years later when I was alone in Japan, suffering another neurological issue...I walked into a hospital in rural south Japan, where the neurosurgeon on call studied under him! What are the chances. Dr. Humphreys made such an impact on the world and he is NEVER forgotten. I am so blessed to have crossed his path and I hope his family holds this close! So much love and Rest in Power Doc! You are so loved!

I was one of Dr Humphreys patients back in February of 1993. He resected a frontal astrocytoma which ultimately saved my life, and for that I am eternally indebted to him.

Rest in peace Dr. Humphreys

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Humphreys. He was my neurosurgeon since birth until the day he retired. I looked forward to going to see him every year at Sick Kids. He cared for me with compassion and treated me with respect. He always called me "big guy" which reminded me of how brave I was as a child despite the many challenges I faced. He was the best neurosurgeon any child could have. You will be missed but never forgotten. My thoughts and prayers go out to Dr. Humphreys and his family. May he R.I.P.

A true gentleman, who cared for every child with compassion and respect. Always a smile for staff and patient. He worked tirelessly to better the lives of children with brain injury and helped bring paediartic neurosurgery to International Renound. Working in the early days of diagnostic imaging of the brain I know how difficult it was. So much relied on a physician's diagnostic skills. Neurosurgery and radiology worked as a team. Nice to be a small part of that team working Dr. Humphreys. A wonderful physician a caring person who has jioned his bride. Condolences to your family
Take Care and God Bless

My condolences to you all on the loss of such a lovely man, an excellent surgeon, and a caring, empathetic and clever doctor. He was a colleague at Sickkids, a leader in the hospital and in the medical community. He was also fun, and funny and kind.
As an anaesthesiology staff, I was always delighted to see his face over the drapes, and knew that the work might be difficult but the surgeon would not.

This is such sad news.
I worked with Dr.Humphreys at Sickkids, and he was our daughter's neurosurgeon 22 years ago. He was so lovely with everyone.
I remember our first appointment so well. Clare was two years old.
Dr. Humphreys said "So why are you here today Clare".
Clare said "I came to tell you a joke"!
Dr. Humphreys pulled up a chair and said "Ok, Lets hear it".
Clare said, "what's the lion's favourite game"....Dr. Humphreys looked at me with that sweet grin, then said "I dunno, what's the lion's favourite game?".
Clare said "swallow the leader"!
Dr. Humphreys just turned to me and said "I'm going to set her up with my grandson"!!
He will be sooooo missed. He was in an elite group of lovely people, amazing doctors. We are sending prayers.

My sincere condolences to the family of Robin Humphreys. He was an excellent Neurosugeon, and I had the distinct privilege of scrubbing or circulating for him in the OR at Sickkids. He was an excellent teacher and calm under pressure. He performed many interesting and difficult procedures during his tenure there. He was also a friend.
May God grant you peace and comfort as you bury your beloved father and grandfather.
