RODERICK TOWLE Obituary

October 2, 1941 – March 29, 2025 Peacefully at home, with his devoted wife of 50 years, Maryl, and a team of committed caregivers at his side, Derek lost his battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Born in the Town of Mount Royal, he attended Trinity College School and Town of Mount Royal High School, after which he attended McGill University and the University of New Brunswick, obtaining his bachelor's degree in Economics. Derek received his Chartered Accountant designation from the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and then his MBA from what is now known as the Ivey Business School. Upon graduation, Derek joined Nordair Ltd. where he became Vice President of Finance. After the sale of Nordair Ltd. to Air Canada, he and James F. Tooley formed Jaytowl in 1979. Together, they enjoyed many successful years until Jim's passing in 1998, after which Derek continued to advise their clients until his retirement in 2017. In 2007, Derek realized a lifelong dream that he shared with his longtime friend John Withers – breeding and racing thoroughbred horses in the highly competitive New York racing circuit, most importantly in Saratoga Springs. Excitement and nail-biting successes followed. Derek always accepted what life dealt him. He had a wonderful, infectious laugh and never took himself seriously. Family and friends he cherished. With the help of his dedicated team of caregivers, Derek was able to remain at home and was spared many of the difficult complications associated with PSP – a great blessing for him and those who loved him. A service will be held at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Derek's memory to Toronto Western Hospital, Department of Neurology (Special thanks: Dr. David Tang-Wai) or to Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care.
