Rolf HOUGEN Obituary

We are saddened to announce the passing of Rolf Hougen who was born in Tatalrose, BC, on December 17, 1928, and died peacefully in his Whitehorse home on September 5, 2024, surrounded by his family. Rolf was a loving husband to his wife of almost 70 years, Margaret (who died in 2022); proud father to Craig (Mary-Jane), Kelly (Heather), Karen (Jim), Erik (Kim), Greta (Bob), and Maureen (Rick); and "Poppa" to his 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Rolf's life is a testament to the profound impact one person can have on a community and a country. His contributions to the Yukon and Canada, from founding Canadian Satellite Communications (Cancom) , for which he received the Officer of the Order of Canada, to his role as Chair of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, have helped shape the lives of many. Through his varied businesses, the creation of the Yukon Foundation, and his dedication to philanthropy and documenting Whitehorse's history, Rolf's legacy is both vast and deeply personal. As we grieve his passing, we also celebrate the enduring influence he leaves behind in his family and in the Yukon. His spirit will continue to inspire and guide those who had the privilege of knowing him. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Yukonfoundation.com in the Hougen Family Fund.

Dear Hougen family my condolences on the loss of both your mom and dad. I worked for Hougens Ltd while they were building the new store around 1960..I even babysat until their regular sitter arrived
I worked in the office and did the
First announcement of sales taking place in the store..hey your dad loved it
Your mom was very beautiful and they were the most handsome couple.
I was sad when we were posted back to Ontario shortly after my son was born. You have all been so lucky with the fantastic and unique opportunities your dad created.
Bless you all..

I offer my condolences to the family and friends of Rolf. I was CEO of Cancom from 1983 to 1986. Rolf was the founder of the company and I have many fond memories of his leadership and foresight in assembling the group of major Broadcasters that united to create the company. He was a good person and he has created a strong legacy which will survive for many years. RIP.
