RON TAYLOR Obituary

December 13, 1937 - June 16, 2025 It is with love and sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ron, at the age of 87. He will be missed by his wife of 44 years, Rona; sons, Drew (Jennifer) and Matthew (Claire); grandsons, Tripp and Elliott; and step-grandsons, Kai and Jake. Ron was born in Toronto and enjoyed playing baseball at Talbot Field from a young age. He signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1956 to play in the minor leagues while simultaneously earning his degree from the University of Toronto in Electrical Engineering (1961) during the off seasons. In 1962, he was called up, starting an 11-year Major League career including two World Series Championships with the St. Louis Cardinals (1964) and the New York "Miracle" Mets (1969). Near the end of his playing career, he was asked to go on USO Good Will Tours, visiting field hospitals in Vietnam to offer encouragement to injured soldiers. It was then that he decided to be a doctor after baseball. He graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1977 at the age of 39. He set up a practice in family medicine and sports injuries and was asked to join the Toronto Blue Jays in 1979 as their team physician, where he was able to keep his love of baseball and medicine together for over 35 years. Ron will be remembered for his dry sense of humour and stories that kept us all laughing and in awe of a life well lived. Visitation will be held at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, on Wednesday, June 25, between the hours of 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral to be held at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, 1585 Yonge Street, on Thursday, June 26, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either Jays Care Foundation or The Salvation Army.

To Ron Curtis: I can't help you contact Carole directly, but I would suggest trying Legacy who were very helpful in making a small change in my original message.
Carole, from what little I know, has led a quiet, pleasant life; but, at 91, she may wish to remain private. If there is an exception to that, it would most likely be childhood friends like you; so Legacy is worth a try.

Ron lived up the street from me on Banff Road. He was 3 years older than me and several decades more mature, but he always made a point of saying "hello Carl", even 20 years later after a 'lifetime' of not running into each other.
He was everything good that people who knew him best have always written; brilliant, kind, modest, thoughtful, with a unique inner glow that separated him from most.
His major league career has [deservedly] been well chronicled, but I was amazed at his ability to complete his engineering degree at U of T, at the same time. It didn't surprise me that he later decided to become a doctor as a service to others, nor that he had the ability to sail through med school.
I can easily picture Ron as a 14 year old, quietly standing on the mound of the east diamond at Talbot Park, as a pitcher for Leaside Lions, calmly waiting for the next batter from Rumble Chev/Olds, sure in the knowledge that, whatever happened, he would have done his best.

My sincere condolences to Rona, the boys and all of the extended family. My father Peter regarded Ron as his absolute best friend and confidant from their early years growing up in Leaside, the high school years at North Toronto to the end of my father´s too short life in 2003. As the last surviving member of the Biggs clan I can only say that Ron was, in my recollection, one of the most remarkable individuals I´ve ever had the privilege to have known. A photographic memory, inspired story teller. Soft spoken yet fiercely proud, if you were fortunate enough to be around him at the right time you´d have stories for days. Just don´t ever ask him about Pete Rose...don´t ask me how I know.

My sincere condolences to Ron's family. I grew up with Ron in Toronto, and would like to contact his sons or his sister, Carole (with whom I used to play as a child.) I have many happy memories from this time. I would appreciate it if someone could get in touch with me. Thank you.

Ron was a great doctor and person. Spent great times flying back from Florida and just talking about life when I needed medical help. God rest a kind and gentle soul. Pete Birchard

I knew Ron and was a friend for 79 of his 87 years. We met at Talbot Park and baseball was a central theme throughout. I was lucky enough to drive to Cleveland with Ron and his father for a weekend and a final look by Al Lopez before the signing. I travelled, so met him mainly in New York or Chicago throughout some of his playing life. Subsequently, he became my family doctor and I mentioned this Toronto jewel to Peter Bavasi of the Toronto Blue Jays when they came to life in 1977. He needed a team doctor and Ron was his man. We saw each other socially for the rest of his life. My grandkids are the same age as his kids, so they got to know each other too.

My heart aches for Rona and the boys. I lost my wife, Hazel, 3 years ago, and she was a fan as well. I am 91 now, and I never met a better man!--Rich Cairns
