Ronald BIDERMAN Obituary

RONALD P. BIDERMAN January 25, 1933 - March 4, 2023 Passed away peacefully at home in Toronto. Beloved father of Ruth and Michael (Iris) and grandfather of Maya, Ian, Joshua, Charlotte and Samuel. Predeceased by his wife, Maralyn, and his parents, Minnie and Morris Biderman. He will be missed by many dear friends and colleagues. Ron (Ronnie) was born in downtown Toronto. He thrived in the vibrant community of the Jewish Left-wing movement, spending summers at Camp Naivelt, where he met Maralyn and many of their lifelong friends. In his youth he was a radical, leader of a student strike at Harbord Collegiate, and an activist in leftist groups at the University of Toronto. He later became disillusioned with the Left, but his deep interest in history, politics and ideas continued to the end of his life. Graduating from law school in 1958, Ron worked with his friend, Jimmy Garfinkle, to build the law firm of Garfinkle Biderman. He was a brilliant lawyer who truly loved the law and took great pleasure in his work. Ron was passionate about his hobbies and interests. He was a serious art collector, a connoisseur of fine wine, an avid reader, a lover of the Yiddish language, a bridge player, and a downhill skier well into his 80s. A man of great integrity and generosity, Ron was also a wonderful conversationalist with a dry sense of humour. He enriched the lives of those who knew him, and inspired us all. The funeral will take place at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel on Monday, March 6th at 2:00.

Ron gave me a chance to become a lawyer when he hired me as an articling student, gave me the benefit of the doubt when I made mistakes, and he showed me what true professionalism and excellence as a litigator looked like, a standard to which I aspired throughout my career. He will always be in my heart, and his memory a blessing.

When I left a small town in the Maritimes for Toronto at age 16, it was Morris' son Ron that suggested and arranged for me to stay at Campus Co-op, where I lived ( and worked!) for 4 years. Regularly, I was invited into the homes of Minnie and Maralyn where I benefited from their support and hospitality. For many months of my studies Ron and Maralyn's tastefully renovated and appointed home with its Steinway was a luxurious cycling destination and resource. I am grateful to the Bidermans for having me amongst their fold for many years. My best wishes to Ruth and Michael.

As a Garfinkle, I knew Ronnie my whole life. I even worked for him for a summer at the Six Centuries Print Room where he patiently put up with my mistakes. He was my father's much respected partner and an incredibly devoted son and husband and proud father. I was in awe of his vigor as he aged. A life truly well lived.

I knew Ron from the Miles Nadal JCC. I enjoyed speaking with him very much - when we disagreed, he still listened. Not afraid to share his thoughts, Ron recommended important books to read. Ron valued ideas and art - I was pleased to see his fantastic poster art collection so generously donated to the AGO. May his memory be a blessing for his family and friends. Charles Novogrodsky

Ron was a founding member of the Master Print & Drawing Society of Ontario in the 1980s and a generous supporter and donor to the Prints & Drawings department of the Art Gallery of Ontario where I worked. Ron and Maralyn were gracious hosts and Ron loved to share his passion and knowledge of old master and 20th century prints. In 2017 he generously gifted a rare collection of over 40 late-19th century "Salon des Cent" posters to the AGO. I will personally miss his wonderful wit, astute insights and enthusiasm for all things "print"! Print collectors of his calibre are extremely rare and becoming more and more scarce. It truly is the end of an era.

Ron was a truly great man. So kind, generous, thoughtful, intelligent, witty, knowledgeable... the list goes on and on. It was a privilege to have known him. He made the world a better place for all who did and he will be greatly missed.
