Ronald KNOWLES Obituary

RONALD FREDRICK BAILEY KNOWLES Was born June 15, 1941, in Cambridge (Galt) and grew up in Brantford and Hamilton. He graduated from UofT with what he always described as "one of Canada's oldest MBA's". He passed away on April 30, 2022 and is survived by his wife, Linda; his son, Jonathan; his daughter, Gillian; and her sons, Charlie and Evan; and by his lifelong friend and cousin, Gary Oakley. He was predeceased by his sister Linda and brothers Dale and Glenn. After a two-decade business career, Ron found his true love: management consulting, initially at Price Waterhouse & Associates and, for almost three decades, Western Management Consulting, where he was for a time National Director, then capping off his working life in his own firm. Ron was a part-time faculty member in the Executive Development stream at the Rotman School of Management and, for the past twenty years, at the University of St. Michael's College Diploma program in Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability where his greatest love was mentoring the students. Ron took an interest in most everything (except how machinery worked!) He loved working with his clients, many of whom became friends. He had many and varied interests. He was a keen golfer (a love-hate relationship), active in tennis and, at the Donalda Club, took leadership roles where he was, among other things, President. A lover of classical and choral music, travel, and theatre, he was a voracious and eclectic reader. He was an active board volunteer throughout his adult life, most recently at Pax Christi Chorale and the Arts and Letters Club, where he was a member of the Literature and Architecture committees, as well as the Board of Directors, until ill health forced him to step back. Ron has requested that there be no funeral, but a celebration of life which will take place later in the year. Cremation has taken place.

I had lost touch with Ron and met with him a number of times nearly 15 years ago. He was a great mentor of mine. To learn of his passing is a shock. My sincere condolences.

I was just advised of Ron's passing. I am so sorry for your loss. He was a wonderful mentor to me and was my sounding board as I navigated challenges in my role as the executive Director of a national association. His wealth of experience and insight was so valuable and his kind words of encouragement meant so very much to me. I will miss his calmness when I was navigating a difficult professional issue, his quiet contemplation followed by his solid advice and his friendship. He never steered me wrong and made me believe in myself and to trust my gut. My sincerest condolences to his family.

It saddens me to see Ron has passed. Along with his brother Glenn a few months ago. Their father Gord was my step father, who I miss a lot.
I am so very sorry for your loss Jonathan and Gillian.
You are welcome to call me anytime, I would love to hear from you.

Linda - I spoke with Ron a few weeks ago so I knew this was coming but it is still a shock. Ron was a valued colleague for nearly 20 years. He was generous with both his wisdom and support, and in fact helped me get started when I had just joined WMC. Ron was wonderful company. I miss the conversations, the coffees, the lunches and the company gatherings where we were able to spend time with both of you.

On behalf of myself and Marion, please accept our deepest sympathies and may Ron rest in peace.

Ron Knowles was the best boss I ever had in my long career. At Price Waterhouse he was a perfect mentor, teacher, scholar, and was always kind and transparent, expecting nothing less than your best. At every meeting, he was the smartest ( and most handsome) man in the room. We kept in touch for many years but I am so sad to have missed seeing him in his last years. He was exceptional...talented, kind, funny and one of the most authentic human beings I have ever known.
Linda, you were his sunshine. I am so very sorry for your loss.
I send you many hugs and you are in all of our thoughts.

I am a past-President of the Canadian Bar Association. Over a number of years, indeed decades, sometimes from afar but often very close at hand, I have seen Ron devote enormous blocks of time and limitless personal energy to helping the CBA handle demanding issues in productive, friendly and understanding ways. I send deep condolences to all of Ron´s family, and thanks felt by hundreds for all the contributions he so selflessly made. I know I am not alone in saying that I have learned a great deal from Ron, and that his example will have made better people of a lot of us.

I knew Ron at the Arts and Letters Club. What a gracious man he was, with a quiet sense of humour and an impressive knowledge of the arts. Rest in peace, Ron.

I was a friend of Ron´s at the Arts & Letters Club. He was my go-to guy for book recommendations. If it came from Ron you read it! Iknew that he had opted for MAID, and I thought about him all last Friday. The world is suddenly a lot poorer. Ken and I send you our sincere sympathies, and if you are planning a celebration that includes friends we would be happy to know about it.

My deepest sympathy to Ron's family on his passing. I am another great fan of his from the USMC CSR program. I was on the Advisory Committee for the program and a guest lecturer. Not only did I admire his knowledge and quiet leadership but also his kindness and love of the students. The program , and I, will miss him.

Ron was a colleague at St. Mike's, a patient golf companion, a fellow book lover who introduced me to the Arts and Letters Club and a dear, dear friend. He will be sadly missed by all whose lives he touched. My heart goes out to Linda and his family.

There are very few people that are true, blue and straight up advisors to people professionally and personally. Ron was one of those people.

It was an honour to work with him, and also enjoy many golf rounds with him.

At WMC, Ron was the conscience of the firm. It points to the fact that you don't have to be big to be good, just be honest and respectful.

Ron, as a fellow golf enthusiast, I just hope there are great golf courses we can play upstairs.

Linda, all the best to you! I always respected you in what you contributed to the success of the outplacement profession.
