Roy SCHATZ Obituary

ROY EDWARD SCHATZ 1931 - 2021 It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Roy Edward Schatz, who died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 30, 2021. Roy was born on November 7, 1931, the first of two children of Harvey Franklin Schatz and Violet (Merry) Schatz. Predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Diana; he is survived by daughters, Laura (Cameron Binkley) and Joanie (Geoffrey Belisle); son, Roland; and grandchildren, DK, Roland, Abbey, Michelle, Delaney, and Riley. He is also mourned by his best friend and sister, Ruth Cox; her family; and many cousins and their families. Roy had many passions in life - education, music, tennis, Georgian Bay, community service, and, most importantly, family and friends. Having graduated from the University of Toronto (U of T) with a Masters degree in French, he dedicated his entire career to furthering excellence in teachers, students, and the education system. His grammar skills were second to none and he took every opportunity, be it meeting minutes, children's schoolwork, his children's letters from camp, or Diana's work, to correct grammar (whether invited to or not). It was fitting that he met the love of his life, Diana, at U of T, during a production of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado. Together with pianist and conductor Clifford Poole, he founded the St. Anne's Music & Drama Society (MADS) in 1963 and appeared in each of the first 57 annual productions, either in the 'patter song' lead roles or in the chorus. The consummate showman, Roy was never happier than when he was sharing his love of music with others. Roy was a legend both on and off the tennis court. He played tennis weekly in Toronto and at the family cottage. He was renowned for organizing the men's morning tennis games and he loved to use his operetta voice to announce, "make this your last game, gentlemen." He dedicated his time and wisdom to community service and helping others tirelessly and enthusiastically. He was President of more than 20 organizations dedicated to education, St. Anne's Church, seniors, the community, and his beloved Georgian Bay. He fought as an advocate and protector of Georgian Bay and the work he started and supported continues today. Even in his final days, he was still working on the community dinner at St. Anne's Church and with the Georgian Bay Great Lakes Foundation. Although Roy had many passions and loves in his life, his family was the most important. He was the most wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, and 'Papa'. Nothing brought him more joy than being all together, particularly at the family cottage in Pointe au Baril ('PaB'), or in his younger years at Peacock Point. PaB was his happy place. He raked his beach for hours to ensure it was pristine for guests. He especially loved when all the grandchildren and their friends would come to enjoy his world-famous "Roy Boy" cookies and to swim at his beach. This was pure joy for him. There is sadness at his passing, but we can take solace in the fact that his was a life lived truly to its fullest. Roy's pure joie de vivre was matched only by his constant dedication to making the world around him a better place. His legacy will be the countless lives he touched and brightened along the way. A celebration of life is planned for Spring 2022, when it is hoped that we will be able to gather and celebrate his life properly. For those who wish to donate to Roy's favourite causes, they are Georgian Bay Great Lakes Foundation and St. Anne's Church Restoration Fund.

I did not know Roy (or Diana) well but was introduced to both of them by Marcia Astor, Roy's neighbour 'across the water' at Pointe-au-Baril. I remember Roy as such a splendid man, going off early to play tennis at the Ojibway Club each morning and marching in the chorus in his last Gilbert and Sullivan play, Patience. He will be remembered fondly by so many people.

As a constant fan of St. Anne's MADS and a fellow-fan of Pte Au Baril my path often crossed that of Roy . On every occasion I found him to be a perfect gentleman and a charming guest. I so miss his wonderful delivery of the G and S Patter songs and his presence at our cottage
Masses on the Moss (to which he often brought cookies) We last spoke shortly after Diana's death and I was just thinking of calling him up to see how he was managing in his new home when I heard of his death. My heart goes out to his children ( and grandchildren) who lost both parents (and grand-parents) in such a short time and sadly we shall, none of us, see their like again. A huge loss to St Anne's and Georgian Bay. Hope Smith

I played the role of Dick Deadeye in the Gilbert & Sullivan production of HMS Pinafore. This took place in either 1957 or 1958 at Camp Kawagama in Dorset, Ontario. Roy loved G&S as much as he enjoyed instructing the cast made up of primarily teenagers. In 2006, at the last Camp Kawagama reunion at the former site of the camp, Roy regaled us with his version of a song from HMS Pinafore, which I videotaped and gave him a copy of his performance. I had the opportunity to thank him for all that he had done at CK and was quite surprised that he truly remembered me. You were an inspiration to all of us Roy!

It was a great privilege and joy to work with Roy onstage - an off - as part of the Toronto Gilbert & Sullivan Society. he was one of the founding members, and always a dedicated member of the Board of Directors. I will always fondly remember his wonderful stories about G&S in Toronto, and how the city was many years ago. I will miss him, but I'm so glad I had the opportunity to know him. God Bless you, Roy!

Definitely a teacher I remember - took German and French through gr. 13 and in uni (geology) had to pick a "foreign language" to orally test to graduate. Picked German since many geology terms link to German and I passed with little effort!!

One year while in German class my mother (unknown to me) invited Mr. Schatz for dinner since my grandparents immigrated to the US from Alsace and their 1st language was German. As a teen, having a teacher for dinner was awkward but I still remember it as a very enjoyable time.

Since retirement, I've traveled extensively in Europe and made good use of my French and German - wish I could have passed that on to Roy.

A truly elegant gentleman on and off the tennis court. I knew him mostly from his tennis and he always brightened the court with his smile. He knew everyone at the Ojibway Club, and he always greeted with genuine enthusiasm. He will be sorely missed, but never forgotten!

Sending very sincere condolences to the Schatz family at this time. I enjoyed many years of singing with Roy at St. Anne's- his good humour, his love of music, song, and the special fellowship of a choir were unmatched. Sometimes almost too much on a Sunday morning, but all those mornings are remembered with a special fondness for Roy's unfailing enthusiasm and encouragement.
