Russell SMITH Obituary

RUSSELL GORDON SMITH It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Russell Gordon Smith on September 25, 2022 after his year-long battle with esophageal cancer. Russell spent his last month at his family home on Bowen Island surrounded by his loving family and their partners. He leaves behind his wife, Gillian, and their five children: Jessica (Steven), Alex (Ellie), Amelia (Sam), Griffin (Madie), and Rosie. Russell is predeceased by his parents, Hilary and Brian Smith, stepfather Peter Kelland, and sisters Clare and April. He will be lovingly remembered by his brother and sister-in-law Clive and Carol Smith and their children: Rachel (Tom), Greg (Chen), Stephanie (Hugh), his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Edward and Mariette White and their daughters Emma and Charlotte. Russell was born in Leicester, UK on the 4th of November 1959. As a young boy he attended Stoneygate in Leicester before heading off to join his brother at Uppingham boarding school in Rutland. At seventeen, Russell travelled to India for seven months, where he volunteered with Mother Teresa's organization. Following his travels to India, Russell received his degree in Theology from Oxford University, Keble College. He adored sports of all kinds but was particularly proud of captaining the Oxford Eton Fives team. Following his time at Oxford, Russell was also a proud member of The Jesters Club, actively participating and hosting throughout his adult life. Russell had a strong passion for mental health advocacy and as a volunteer, ran the Leicester division of the Samaritans, a crisis hotline. Aspiring to work in the family business, Russell was sent to serve at Le Pigonnet in the South of France, training at a high level of silver service before joining his brother in the family's industrial catering business: Brian Smith Catering Services. Russell loved to ski and travelled every year to Kitzbühel, Austria. There, on a T-bar ski lift, he met the love of his life, Gillian. They were married eight months later in Vancouver on August 25, 1990. Russell and Gillian lived in Leicester for the first seven years of their marriage before moving to Gillian's hometown, Vancouver, BC in 1997 to raise their growing family. In 1999 Russell began working at Odlum Brown as an investment advisor, retiring as a company director in June 2019. Russell had a deep love for music. He sang with the Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir and was passionate about his two beloved grand pianos. His children have fond memories of falling asleep to Dad practicing with Mum often joining in song. Russell should be celebrated for his dedication to his community through holding board member positions for many of the organizations in which he participated. Russell was a deeply devoted and involved husband and father, creating time to ski every weekend with his family, making his famous pancakes on Sunday mornings, and spending numerous hours in the summer towing kids behind their boat at Hood Point. He will be forever remembered for his sense of humour, his pride in his family, and his deep love for Gillian. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Russell's entire medical team throughout his journey; Dr. James Choi, Jennifer Honey, and Jane Henley for moving heaven and earth to get Russell home to Bowen Island. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 13 at St. Mary's Anglican Church in Kerrisdale, 2490 West 37th Avenue, Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to HIPpy (imahippy.org), an organization very dear to Russell's heart, making vast inroads into early childhood hip dysplasia. Russell was a great friend of mine here in Vancouver and worked with me on music boards, namely Vancouver Opera and Health Arts Society.

He was always friendly, gracious and kind. He was a gentle man and classy in everything he did. I will miss him a lot

A wonderful friend, a very special person and someone who epitomized kindness and generosity. I was fortunate enough to have been a 'fresher' at Keble College alongside Russell back in 1978. We were both studying Theology - well we tried! He was such fun and enjoyed life to the full believing strongly that University life was there to be experienced in every way possible. Some years later my wife and I were looked after with phenomenal generosity and kindness by Russell and Gillian when we visited Canada. This included staying in their house whilst the family was mountaineering and lending us their car for a memorable trip to Vancouver Island.
Russell was an exceptional friend and he remains in our minds and hearts. It was a huge privilege to have had my life enriched to the extent that it was by Russell. I will forever be grateful to him. Thank you, Russell and our love to Gillian and all the family.

We were so saddened to learn of Russell's passing.

He was a sincere, generous, and inspirational man with whom we shared many wonderful, wide-ranging chats and stories - so many of which were focused around his beloved family and friends.

Russell's kindnesses, advice, and listening ear were blessings that will not soon be forgotten. His dedication to helping so many different individuals and groups was a model for us all.

Gillian and family, our thoughts are with you during this time of loss. We know that Russell's love for you all will remain in your hearts forever, and that he continues to watch over you with pride.

We are so much the better for having known Russell. He was a good man who touched many over his all-too-short lifetime.

Thinking of you at this incredibly sad time Gillian. Remembering the warmth of Russell with you at our tennis club, offering musical encouragement to our son on piano as he timidly played for us - a beautiful couple, wonderful family and a lifetime of memories you all share. Forever fill your hearts with all of these blessings.

Gracious, caring, generous and self-deprecating, Russell was a gem of a human being. He loved Gillian and their children to the core of his being. Nobody could tell a story better than Russell, and he possessed a wonderful sense of humour. What we loved most about Russell was his kindness and generosity of spirit. He was always keen to help others and served on an amazing array of volunteer boards. We particularly appreciated his thoughtful and constructive contributions to the Board of St. George´s School and his unfailing focus on student well-being. Like so many others, we will miss him, but feel blessed to have known and loved him. He has left the world a better place than he found it. We will be travelling in the UK and therefore are unable to attend his memorial service in Vancouver. However, we plan to visit the Chapel at Keble College, his alma mater, and say a prayer in his memory.

Gillian, Griffin and Rosie .. our paths crossed thru WMSC, and feel compelled to send my condolences as Russel made such an impact on me. I had not ever met such a kind, welcoming, giving man who volunteered and cheered his and all participants with such sincerity! He was so humble and so passionate about his family. He just gave me such a warm feeling and I wanted to share with you how lucky I feel to have known him.
May he be singing harmony with the angels and finding sweet sunny powdery trails in the hereafter.
