Ruth CLARKE Obituary

RUTH GLADYS CLARKE (née HUNT) September 27, 1926 - August 15, 2022 Ruth died peacefully in her 96th year at Toronto's St. Michael's Hospital after a full and rich life. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest George Clarke, and is survived by her four children, Paul Clarke (Denise), Peggy McKee (Ramsay), Patsy Duffy (Paul) and David Clarke (Sharon). Ruth was the proud grandmother of Becky, Greg and Geoff (Paul and Denise); Hilary and Allan (Peggy and Ramsay); Matthew, Evan, Stephen and Alison (Patsy and Paul); and Kyle and Aaron (David and Sharon). Ruth also leaves behind 16 cherished great-grandchildren, who will forever know her as GG. Ruth's unwavering intellectual curiosity led to a life full of adventure and new experiences. After raising her family and a career in research at the Hospital for Sick Children, Ruth lived another full life in retirement. Her interests showed no bounds. She always had a weaving project on the go and at one time had three looms in her home; she delved into the genealogy of her family and Ernie's family, leaving a legacy for the next generations; she belonged to four book clubs and faithfully read the newspaper every day, keeping up with current events; and she travelled extensively - those who were lucky enough to be on a trip with her know they didn't need a guidebook because they had Ruth and her knowledge. Ruth's favourite place was her cottage of 60 years at Barrow Bay on the Bruce Peninsula, but her greatest happiness came from sharing in the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always showed a keen interest in their lives and education and opened her heart and home to them over the years. They all have special memories of her and will keep them alive for the generations to come. Ruth will be greatly missed by her family near and far and the many friends she made over the years. A celebration of Ruth's life will be held on September 17, 2022, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's United Church, 729 St. Clair Avenue West, Toronto. In lieu of flowers, Ruth would welcome donations to the Ernest G. Clarke Bursary, awarded to students who have financial need and who live in a Victoria University residence at U of T. To donate, go to uoft.me/clarke-bursary or call Mary Heinmaa at 416-585-4502.

Ruth was a "new girl" with Enza Lomonaco and me at the Toronto Guild of Spinners and Weavers; we three joined the same night, and shared years of numerous joint projects. Years of friendship came from that evening. Ruth rescued me and sometimes my daughter, and gave us use of her home and cottage one summer when our world had fallen apart. She was a person I think of as my fairy godmother, who shared her wisdom, care, and love with those in her range. There are very few people with her compassion and willingness to pitch in. A wonderful, unique person with a wonderful sense of adventure.

I met Ruth Clark at a Standish family reunion at Rougemont. It was great to share memories with her. I also met her daughter Patsy Duffy.
A great Lady, Marion Standish

Ruth and I sat near each other at Bloor St. United Church. She and her husband Ernie were part of a group that went to China. My sister Nancy and her husband Richard Smale were also on this trip. Richard found he could sing Jesus Loves me, in Chinese while in China. His family(Service) were missionaries there

Fond memories of Ruth sitting in the living room of that beautiful place on Collier Street, having a wonderful chat, so many years ago. Such an accomplished woman.
Our sincere condolences to your family. Unfortunately, we won't be able to join for the celebration of Ruth's life, as we will be on holiday.
Love
Paul and Susanne

Ruth Clarke

Ruth will be missed by her many friends at the Victoria Women´s Association (VWA) at Vic, her alma mater. Joining our Association in 1980, she later served on the Executive in several positions, including that of Treasurer. She readily and happily joined in the VWA´s celebration of Central Neighbourhood House, a settlement house co-founded by two Vic students in 1910. Always adventurous, she, along with two fellow travellers, spoke to our group following a trip to Palestine; she touched us with her compassion and her insight into a very difficult situation. Ruth´s enthusiasm, curiosity, and kindness are only three of the many qualities that she evinced in her life, a life that was significant and well-lived. May her memory always be a blessing!

I miss Aunt Ruth so much, and I am so deeply grateful for all the wonderful adventures we had together, like having lunch in a cemetery in Paris, and eating hotdogs on the street after seeing a great art show, and hiking on Blowmedown Mountain in Newfoundland. Not to mention our many trips to the Textile Museum, with lunch at the Chinese restaurant on the corner. We talked about art, but we also had great talks about family and I learned so much from her. She is my hero.
