Ruth CROW Obituary

RUTH CROW September 28, 1938 - February 13, 2022 It is with great sadness that we tell of the passing of Ruth. Born in Helsinki died in Toronto; after an intense but also brief struggle with advancing pancreatic cancer. Many thanks for the consummate care and understanding to Dr. Soong and her team at Mount Sinai; and also to those providing home palliative care under the accomplished guidance of Dr. Wortzman. Enormously loved wife of John for 59 years; mother to dearest Rebecca and grandma for lovely Mackenzie in Ottawa; her loving cousin Carita in Spain and sister-in-law Raleigh in Minneapolis; cherished aunt to Ben, Joshua, and their families in Minneapolis; and to Anna Jean and her family in Israel. She will be hugely missed by all. Uniquely missed, of course, by the person grateful to have been her husband. Ruth and John met in Washington DC, falling in love as they quoted Chaucer to each other on Connecticut Avenue and made their first home there. Then, 21 years in Ottawa and finally in Toronto. Aside from her career as a writer and professional editor, Ruth shone with her remarkable gifts of empathy, friendship and sheer kindness, everywhere to everyone. She will be so very fondly remembered as special by so many, including for sure those many women she met and encouraged in the years she spent volunteering, especially at English Club in St. James Town. Ruth was a born teacher. In these extraordinarily trying general circumstances, there will be no celebration of her life of the formal kind. But please mark in your own quiet way, or with each other, the fact that her path and yours had the good fortune to cross.

"Ruth shone with her remarkable gifts of empathy, friendship and sheer kindness, everywhere to everyone." So very true. This is a typical memory of Ruth´s innate kindness: A friend gave me a last-minute ticket to the grand opening of Toronto´s new Opera House. During intermission, I stayed in my seat. As the exiting audience members walked up the sloped aisle, a woman lost her footing and had a bad fall. Immediately, another woman, a bit behind her, raced to her aid, gently helped her up, stayed with her until the shock wore off and she was once again steady. The Guardian Angel? My friend, Ruth. My sincere condolences to the family.
