Ruth DACOSTA Obituary

Ruth daCosta died peacefully at her home on the morning of July 23, 2024, surrounded by love and family. Born on March 15th, 1944, Ruth lived a full and rich 80 years of life in Toronto. She died in the same spirit that she lived - with clarity, dignity and a no-nonsense determination to 'get this show on the road'. Ruth was a strong and fierce advocate for child welfare. She championed young people's right to a second chance and a dignified life. During her remarkable 42-year career, she was a leader, mentor, inspiration, and guide to countless people. She served as the Executive Director of Covenant House, Toronto, for 22 years (1989-2011). As a visionary force-of-nature, she led the agency through significant expansion in both capacity and programming for youth. Her unwavering commitment extended beyond Toronto, as she also established a Covenant House in Vancouver, and served as a board member of many youth-focused organizations and foundations in Canada and internationally. Following her retirement, Ruth continued to contribute to her community by serving on the Board of St. Michael's Hospital from 2010-2017. She held a Master's degree from Harvard University and received honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Toronto and Ryerson University. Ruth leaves behind her beloved daughter, Asha daCosta (Santiago Rincon-Gallardo), and her cherished grandsons, Kai and Koji. Her legacy of compassion, advocacy, and unwavering dedication to youth will continue to inspire and impact the lives of many. As she clearly declared, "There will be no funeral, and don't send flowers – do something meaningful." In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in her honour to https://secure.covenanthouse.ca/page/47922/donate/1Covenant House Toronto or the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation.

Hi Asha and family,
My summer with Ruth and Asha was one of my best. I found a cousin, friend and aunt. I am so sorry to hear about Ruth. She was a strong, confident woman, who I very much admired. I'm so sorry our mom's didn't stay in touch. I wish you lots of love. ~Krissy~

I knew Ruth in our condo and always enjoyed seeing her, on the bus, or in the corridors. Stylish, quietly confident, and friendly, she led a big life behind a modest facade. I'll miss her around the building. Ann Richards

Dear Asha and family. I was so sorry to read today of your mother´s passing in July.
I met Ruth riding the Harbour Square bus to work. After our morning conversation, I was always challenged and respectful.
Following a memorable dinner at Ruth´s, I still make roasted grape
tomatoes. In the future, they will be a special remembrance of a special lady.

My deepest condolences to Ruth´s family. I was a faith community member in 2001-2002 in Toronto and returned as an employee in 2006. I was very fond of her, I was so impressed by her resolute commitment to Covenant House, to the youth we served and to us as staff. She was quite the force, and had a mission. At a personal level I found her wise, encouraging, and loving. « I am intimidated by no one! » she told me one time.

Dear Asha,

My deepest condolences, as I have known, respected and loved your mom since I was born. She was such a remarkable and impactful person in so many people's lives. Her lifelong friendship with my mom and being a such a strong, positive influence to her, myself and my brothers is something I will always remember and love.

I can still remember our trip to Boston in the mid '80s to visit Harvard, staying with her in her Hubbards vacation home and popping in to visit her at Covenant House. Many great times and very fond memories forever etched in my mind.

Sending you and your family my thoughts, blessings and love.

Peace and Love,

I had the privilege of serving as a volunteer and board member at `the House´ during Ruth´s tenure as ED. She was the epitome of giving unconditionally. Many times she would tell anyone who would listen "our goal at CH is to put ourselves out of business ". Ruth was all about putting programmes in place that would END youth homelessness...a goal that is still in the works and, hopefully, achievable.
Needless to say, Ruth impacted me positively in so many ways. For that, I will be eternally grateful.
My sincere condolences to Ruth´s family. You have lost an icon but gained a Holy Spirit.
Rest in Action, my dear friend!
