Ruth MARKS Obituary

RUTH MARKS In her 88th year, at home in Toronto, after a long illness, on February 27th, 2021. An educational librarian at OISE since the late 60's until her retirement, Ruth (nee Newman) was a voracious reader, and a lover of the arts, travelling the world on her beloved opera tours. Up until her death, she continued to read the New York Times daily, cover to cover. Predeceased by her husband, Alan, whom she adored, and her brother, Albert Newman, Ruth leaves behind her brother Sam Newman (Goldie), her sister Sally Kert (Sheldon, deceased), her children Jeremy (Elizabeth), Pamela Assivero (Victor), and Jonathan, and her grandchildren Rebecca (Alan Pinkert) and Benjamin. Her friends were steadfast and devoted. A family graveside service will be held on Tuesday March 2, 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth's name to a public library or to the charity of your choice are welcomed.

To ALL of Ruth’s family,
Though I have not seen Ruth in decades all of my fond memories of her when I was a child and young teen fill me family warmth, laughter, lots of good food at both our family homes and holidays shared together. Ruth was lovely and warm and one of the smartest people I know.
Much love to you all ( and I am just hearing about this news today 7/17/21.) Sally Neal Jackson

Ruth and I were colleagues at OISE from the 60's. She was the consummate professional, engaging well with people, knowing how to access difficult requests, and the ability to know more about topics than anyone else. She was a trusted member of OISE, serving on many important committees. Even more than a colleague she was a special friend. We shared a wonderful friendship that include many wonderful times at your home on Wembley. All members of the family warmly welcomed me during my visits, and I missed those occasions after we each retired. If you so wish, I'd love to hear about Ruth's later years and about the lives of each of you (Jeremy, Pamela and Jonathon). My address is [email protected]
Each of you were enriched by all the wonderful qualities that Ruth possessed.
With much affection, Joel
