Ruth TATE Obituary

RUTH TATE Ruth made the most of her 80 years. She passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. Ruth was born in Kamloops, British Columbia to Grace and Jack Coates who raised her and her younger sister, Ann, to value family, education, and music. Ruth spent summers at Shuswap Lake where she had great fun on the water with her gang of friends forging lasting friendships. She could not wait to head off to Vancouver and the University of British Columbia where she studied French language, literature, and teaching. After a year of teaching in Dawson Creek in Northern B.C., the travel bug took Ruth to Europe. She fell in love with Paris where she studied French at the Sorbonne. Back in Canada she chose to settle in Toronto and began a 40-plus year career as a dedicated French teacher. Ruth married Howard Tate, also a UBC graduate, in 1971. Ruth was so proud of their two sons, Brad (Lesya Dacko) and Mark (Victoria Ketteringham); and adored her grandchildren Kiara and Alyssa, and the newest additions Olivia and Owen. She went to most of her sons' hockey games and continued the tradition with Kiara and Alyssa. Ruth would have loved to play hockey herself. Ruth cherished time with her grandchildren, taking them on outings and entertaining them at home, displaying endless energy, attention, and patience. Following a busy family and work life, Ruth and Howard rekindled their interest in bridge. Ruth, a ruby life master, played at the club level and enjoyed bridge cruises and tournaments. She also indulged her passion for reading, discussing books and travelling the world. Ruth loved and valued music. She continued the family tradition of Christmas carol singing and sang in various choirs over the years. Ruth was an RCM certified piano teacher and delighted in sharing her love of piano with her grandchildren. Friendship was important to Ruth, and she tried to stay connected to her many neighbours, good friends from school, university, teaching, and other activities. She made and maintained many deep and lasting friendships because she was kind, unassuming, an excellent listener and provider of great advice. As a wife, sister, mother, grandmother, friend, and colleague, Ruth was a stable and reliable support that will leave a hole that can never be filled. She will be missed more than she could ever have imagined. Ruth requested that any memorial donations be made to the Toronto Public Library at: donate.tplfoundation.ca. A celebration of life for Ruth will be held on Saturday, February 24th between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at 205 Glengarry Ave., Toronto, ON, M5M 1E3.

I have been searching for "Madame Tate" for years, via social media, as she was in my top 5 favourite teachers of all time. She taught me a valuable lesson, which I often reference in my talks and workshops. I am very saddened to learn that she has passed, but I wanted to express how very grateful I am to have had her asa my French teacher, some 30 odd years ago at Earl Haig. I remember her fondly, and am wishing you all peace, love and strength, when you think of her.
With Gratitude, Ayanna

Dear Howie, Brad, Marc and Anne, I am so sorry for your loss. Brad and Marc your Mother and Father were the first to trust me in taking care of children just over 40 years ago when we lived on Hillsdale when they went to play cards on Friday nights. Your mother was very good to me. I remember coming home from University a few times and she helped me out with my French grammar that was way over my head. She talked non stop about how lucky she was to have two amazing boys as children. She was an such a wonderful person. I am grateful that I knew her. On behalf of my mom and my two sisters please accept our sincerest sympathies. Mike Grafstein.

I first met Ruth when my first wife Margot and I lived across the hall from Howard and Gord Stovall in the late 1960´s. We did not socialize a lot but I remember Ruth´s good nature. I seem to recall her interest in bridge. I also remember how much time they spent in bed together. Those were early days We did not stay in touch, sadly. Please accept my sympathies, Howard. We never know when our number will be called, so enjoy each day.

Dear Howie: we are shocked and saddened at this loss. She was a welcome addition to any gathering. I remember my shock when I learned she was your wife, (No insult intended) at one of George´s birthday parties at your house! Please accept our heartfelt condolences. She will be missed.

Ruth was a great friend to my parents for 50 years since being neighbours on Hillsdale. I enjoyed seeing her every year at my parents party and she was always interested in how my brother and I and our families were doing. She certainly loved teaching as I'm not sure she ever retired...she will be missed. Condolences to Howard, Brad, Mark and their families from the Orrs.a

It was a great shock for my wife and I to learn about Ruth's passing. She was a terrific person and a great friend. She was very supportive of all of her colleagues in the French department at Earl Haig, where we taught together for many years. On several occasions, Ruth hosted the department including spouses and other friends at her home. We have very fond memories of her generous, friendly, warm, and gracious personality. You are in our hearts. Rest in peace in heaven. "Au revoir Madame"

Sincerely,

Frank and Rozika Sulatycki

Ruth was my cousin from my dad´s side. I didn´t get to see Ruth much, but she was a gracious host when my husband and I visited in 2014.
So very sad to lose her.

The passing of Mrs. Tate is indeed very sad news. I had the pleasure of having Mrs. Tate for grade 9 home room and French for the 1974-75 school season. She was certainly a great influence and absolutely the very best teacher I ever had.
Deepest sympathies to the family.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs. Tate. She was one of my favourite teachers - period. I had her for home room and French at Woodbine Jr. High in North York, Toronto, in the mid-1970s. I became a teacher myself, probably due to the influence of an outstanding teacher and person such as Mrs. Tate. Sincerely, Paul Strangways.
