S. ELLIS Obituary

DR. S. RONALD ELLIS July 3, 1934 - December 3, 2023 Ron passed peacefully, at home, surrounded by family. "I've had a truly blessed life," Ron would often say as the clock was ticking down. The early days with his loving parents, Mae and Stanley; and his sisters, Loreen and Marie. The blind date that led to a wonderful 67-year journey with his soulmate, Ruth. An incredibly close-knit group of friends to share life's adventures. His children, Rob and Tyler, and the road-trip sing-a-longs, summers at the cottage, and Christmases at the farm. The addition of Karin (Rob), Jacqueline (Tyler); and beloved grandchildren, Jake and Danika; and a wonderful extended family that was so precious to him. All to the backdrop of a storied career, which garnered, as Ron would say, a rather embarrassing pile of accolades. Ron was a practicing engineer when his mother said, after an argument, that he should be a lawyer. With Ruth's approval, this led to him becoming… a partner at Osler Hoskin & Harcourt, a professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, an early Director of Parkdale Community Legal Services, the Director of Education at the Law Society of Ontario, Director of the Bar Admission Course, and founding Chair of what is now Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT). Ron was a leader in Canada's administrative justice community, recognized by the Law Society of Ontario with its medal for outstanding service in accordance with the highest ideals of the legal profession. Ron authored many published articles and a book, Unjust by Design, championing the creation of an administrative justice system that might one day be "just by design." Ron Ellis was a marvelous human being with a lively, enquiring mind and a great sense of humour. A party to celebrate Ron's 'blessed life' will be held in the new year. Ron's family invite you to share thoughts and reminiscences of Ron on the online memorial site at: www.kudoboard.com/boards/Lub6mkgy/ronellis In honour of Ron, donations to Tribunal Watch Ontario (www.tribunalwatch.ca/) would be appreciated. Tribunal Watch Ontario was established to promote and continue Ron's work. It advocates for tribunal independence and access to justice for all. Ron's family would like to express their gratitude to Morley Bedford Funeral Services.

Ruth and family, I was so sorry to read this while searching to see what great things Ron was up to. I have such great memories of him at the Tribunal but mostly as a fair, just and compassionate person. My sincere condolences. Bev

My name is Barbara Louise Ferriman nee Keffer. We had wonderful times as the Keffer Family, alternating homes with Aunty Mae and Uncle Stan for Xmas every year. Also Cottage visits with the Ellis Family at Belmont Lake (Keffer's Castle) with Aunty Mae and Mom picking wild raspberries for Pies, card games and fishing.
Unfortunately, I am the only remaining Keffer sibling. We lost my brother Jim a few months ago and my sister Janet died when she was only 66.
The fond memories with the Ellis Family still remain. Such a wonderful childhood.
Best wishes to you all!
Sincerely,
Louise

My deepest condolences to Ruth and Ron's family and the many friends and colleagues who mourn his passing. I met Ron almost 50 years ago as a law student and he has had a tremendous impact on my life and career. He brought to Ontario's legal community and the broader community an enquiring brilliant mind and a deep commitment to access to justice for those most vulnerable. His work lives on through the multitude of people whom he influenced and through the institutions he founded and contributed to.
