Sally HASTINGS Obituary

We are sad to announce the unexpected quiet passing of Sally Hastings, age 96 (04/04/1924 – 14/08/2024). Born in Niagara Falls, Ontario to Colonel Charles and Eva Dobbie Vandersluys, Sally is survived by daughter Jennifer (Kevan Kristjanson), son John (Kelly), grandchildren Michael Hastings (Alicia) and Megan Cahill (Brandon), and great-granddaughter Madeleine. Sally said often "Thank you to my extended family past and present and to my friends, regular and four-footed, who have so enriched my journey." An avid bridge player to the end, a lover of early morning lake swims and a defender of nature, the environment and animals, Sally will be greatly missed for her quick wit, winning smile and positive kindness and determination. The family look forward to raising a glass to her with friends and family. In her memory, donations made to the animal shelter of your choice would be welcome.

Sally was a family friend and a wonderful host when we would visit her Muskoka cottage. She was a lovely person and will be missed dearly.

I played bridge against Sally for many years at the Glebe Bridge Club and found our matches to be among the most enjoyable. She was always a friendly and happy face. I have cropped a picture of her from the club's group photo of the Christmas party in December 2018. I find it totally appropriate that she had the biggest smile of the group.

I had the pleasure of playing duplicate bridge against Sally for a number of years as a fellow member of the Glebe Road Duplicate Bridge Club. I say 'pleasure' because that's indeed what it always was. Sally was always a warm and congenial opponent whenever I played against her at the bridge table. She always had such a lovely smile! That said, she was always such a crackerjack bridge player: skilled, resourceful and always ready to make you pay for it if you were guilty of misplaying any given bridge hand. I miss Sally for it, just as much as I miss her friendliness and that lovely smile of hers. Rest in Peace, Sally. Fondly remembered.

I had the privilege of meeting Sally over many duplicate bridge games in the Muskoka area - especially at Windermere golf and country club. She was a fierce competitor despite her gentle demeanor. Sally will be sadly missed.

I am so fortunate to have shared my entire life with Sally. She was ever so wise, caring and inclusive. Really was a second mother in many ways. You are sorely missed but I know you´ll be "there" for every celebratory toast, and there will be many. Hugs to the family left behind, I so value your friendships too. Luv B

Sally was a force of nature, a lover of nature and a preserver of nature in all its forms. A generous, extroverted, humane and lovable lady. A bridge guru who shared her expertise with many of us disciples. Thank you Sally for being all you were to so many appreciative people. Love Stacey & Darryl Pepper
