Samuel GEWURZ Obituary

SAMUEL GEWURZ It is with profound sadness that the family of Samuel Gewurz z'l announces his passing on Sunday, October 22, 2023 – 7 Cheshvan 5784, in Montreal. Loving husband of Brenda Urman for fifty-three years. Beloved father and father-in-law of Zev and Risa Gewurz, Ilan Gewurz and Julie Shugarman, Ora and Michael Singer. Adored Zaidie of Ariana, Danya, Judah and Raanan Gewurz; Maia, Lyla and Dov Gewurz; Jonas, Emmett, Leo and Caleb Singer. He was the youngest son of Rachel z'l and Judah Leib z'l Gewurz. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Werner z'l and Ruth Gewurz, Gisela z'l and Arthur z'l Garmaise, Dafna (Nundi) z'l and Dov z'l Izraeli. Devoted son-in-law of Rita and Solly z'l Urman. Cherished brother-in-law of Stan and Fran Urman, Brian and Laurie Urman, Toby and Zev Carrey. Dear uncle to his many nieces and nephews. A friend to many in the greater community, among whom he will be fondly remembered. Born in Montreal on December 31, 1939, Sam grew up in a home that was a gathering place for family, community, Torah and tzedakah. These values shaped him throughout his life. Sam was a visionary, a prominent businessman, a community leader, and a philanthropist. He sought to make simchas and celebrate life, always looking for ways to have an impact and make things better. Sam graduated from Outremont High in 1957 and McGill University in 1961. He went into real estate with his father, Judah Leib z'l, and in 1965, founded Proment Corporation to develop commercial and industrial properties. In 1980, Proment entered the residential field and became the primary developer for Nuns' Island. Sam loved the creativity involved in designing wonderful places to live, and cared deeply about the value he was creating for his buyers. Proment won many awards through the years, including, among others, "Developer of the Year," "Green Builder of the Year," and a special award for protecting the Island's natural heritage. He felt tremendous respect and gratitude for the employees and consultants that worked with him in growing Proment and achieving its many accomplishments. He saw each accolade and award as a reflection on his whole team. Sam was awarded the Order of Canada in 2022 for his extraordinary contribution to the nation. He was also the recipient of the Médaille de l'Assemblée Nationale du Québec for his work establishing the Collectif pour L'Unité between the Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities of Nuns' Island. He was appointed into the Grand Verdunois for a lifetime of contribution to the City of Verdun and was a recipient of the Médaille de l'Assemblée Nationale d'Arcy McGee as well as the Governor Generals of Canada Jubilee Medal. Sam was deeply engaged in innumerable community organizations, within both the Jewish and broader Montreal communities and in Israel. He gave his time, deep analytical skills, wisdom and heart to each initiative, and developed relationships of great depth in the process. His favourite moments, however, were spent around the Shabbat table with family and friends, singing zmirot, hearing what mattered to his children and grandchildren, and working to make memories. He accomplished everything he did with Brenda as his trusted life partner. Sam had a significant impact on the lives of everyone he encountered and will be deeply missed. Funeral service from took place from Paperman & Sons, on Monday, October 23rd. Shiva at his home.
