Samuel McCANN Obituary
McCANN, Samuel Brian PhD, 1935 - 2004
Passed away peacefully on Friday, January 30th. Born in Manchester, England on May 19, 1935, he was a graduate of the University of Wales and obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1961. Immigrating to Canada in 1967, he began a 30 year career as a Professor of Geography at McMaster University, retiring in 1997. During his career he worked extensively on all three coastlines of Canada. He derived great pleasure from working with his students, and was dedicated to ensuring their success. Following his retirement, he continued to live life to the fullest, traveling extensively to follow his sporting interests of skiing, kayaking and hiking. A man of varied interests, he set out on the artistic endeavour of pottery and became a really inventive cook, delighting his family with many memorable meals. His interest in theatre, ballet, and literature, both novels and poetry rounded out his busy life with the family. Brian was passionate about his family connections and will be sadly missed by his extended family that was so important to him. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Louise (Paul), and his children Callum and Bronwen. After his diagnosis of prostate cancer he received dedicated care from Dr. Ian Davis. Special thanks to the nurses and staff of ward 395, during his final weeks at the Henderson Hospital. There will be a private funeral service for his relatives. The family welcome friends to attend 'Remembering Brian McCann' at the Faculty/University Club, McMaster University, Hamilton on Saturday, February 7th at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
