Sara BASTEDO Obituary

Bastedo (nee Breithaupt), Sara (Sally) Caroline

Born August 8, 1924, Sally died peacefully May 8, 2014 at Saugeen Valley Nursing Centre, Mount Forest, Ontario. Predeceased by her husband Dr. Don Bastedo, to whom she was married for 59 years. Beloved mother of Mary, Paul (Charlotte Rankin), Frank (Helen Jones) and Jamie (Brenda Hans); proud grandmother of Clare, Patrick, Tim (Jen Clark), Cecilia, Sonya, Peter (Jenna Tessolini), Jacob, Jaya and Nimisha and step-grandmother to Alison and Jacob Regier.
Daughter of Louis and Sara Breithaupt, Sally grew up in Kitchener and trained as a nurse at Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto, graduating in 1946. She married Don Bastedo in 1947 and they moved back to Kitchener where Don practiced as a paediatrician. After raising her family, Sally was a founding member of the K-W Knitters Guild in 1986 and later a member of the Weavers and Quilters guilds. Sally and Don were enthusiastic supporters of the Stratford Festival, since its beginnings in a tent in 1953, and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. Sally also enjoyed bridge, golfing and dining at Westmount Golf Club. Don and Sally were often seen out for their daily walk with the dog and shopping at the Farmers' Market in St. Jacob's.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10 at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. West, Kitchener. 519-745-9495. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Saugeen Valley Nursing Centre in Mount Forest or Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto. On behalf of the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters' Guild, I would like to extend our condolences on Sally's passing. While we hadn't enjoyed her company in recent years, it is always sad to lose someone so involved in the textile crafts community. Our sympathies to all the family.

Deepest condolences to the Bastedo family where we share a connection through the Margaret Avenue Pediatric Clinic. We all share happy memories of those growing up years in K-W. Our prayers are with the family members at this difficult time.

Bastedo, Friday and Whaley - paediatricians in practice together. My mother and Mrs. Bastedo both grads of Sick Kids. My memories of Mrs. Bastedo are how elegant she always was, so beautiful, refined and gracious. Someone commented in an earlier tribute that her death marks the end of an era - and that is my sentiment as well. Mrs. Bastedo, much loved and greatly missed, even by those of us who hadn't seen her for many years but hold many memories. Condolences to the Bastedo and Breithaupt families from the Friday family.

Sally was the sweetest little girl, so soft spoken and kind and gentle - and a beauty.
Don and Sally were friends of both of our parents, and Don was a life saver when our Robin was born and growing up.
Fondly,

Sally is remembered by me and my husband John as a warm, gracious and hospitable lady. While I was Minister in the Unitarian Congregation, she and Don were unfailingly supportive and helpful. My thoughts are with family members.

For Jamie and Family,

I am very saddened to learn of Sally's passing. She was a grand, lovely lady I met years ago. She was remarkably creative with her sewing knitting and weaving. I treasure a shawl she had woven which I was lucky to buy at one of our fund-raising church auctions. Along with her gentle nature she had a wonderful sense of humour. I know your memories of your dear mother and relative will nourish you throughout your years.

The Williams family lived next door to the Bastedos for many years on Frederick Street. We watched the family grow as Mary,Paul,Frank and Jamie and their beloved Irish Setter Penny were added to the flock and all developed predictably into the exemplary group they are today.
Don was an outstanding doctor and father while Sally served as a magnificent "chief of staff" and helpmate -and of course they were both proud and doting parents.
With Sally's passing so passes an era. We shall not see their like again.
My brother Dick and my sister Elizabeth join me in sending our deepest sympathies and warmest thoughts.

I have fond memories from my youth of Sunday dinners at the Bastedo household. Mrs. Bastedo always welcomed me to her home. She was also a childhood playmate to my father. My heartfelt condolences to my friend Paul and the Bastedo family on their loss.

Don Bastedo was the pediatrician for my siblings and I. Sally and Don founded the Unitarian Fellowship with my father Bob Whitton who now resides at Freeport Hospital suffering from dementia. On behalf of my father and family I would like to extend my condolences. Your family helped him through a very challenging time as a single parent. Always think of them with fond memories.

My deepest sympathy to Paul and his family during this difficult time.
Life is a journey and death but a turning point in the road from which we travel to a new place.
Thinking of you,
