SARAH BUNNETT-GIBSON Obituary
(December 11, 1948 – August 15, 2025). Tragically, Sarah suffered a cardiac arrest on Friday, August 15th. She had been taken to St. Michael's Hospital, where she was later removed from Life Support, surrounded by loved ones and the exemplary support team. Sarah attended Bishop Strachan School, where she was known for her kindness and empathy for some of the girls who were lonely boarders or those who struggled at their studies. This was the beginning of a lifetime of caring, support, and kindness offered to every type of person she encountered and befriended. She transferred to Central Technical School and later OCAD to pursue her passion for the arts, specializing at that time in stained glass, clay, and silk painting. As a strikingly beautiful young woman, she attracted the glamourous company of rock stars, actors, musicians, racing car drivers, Olympic skiers, even a role in "Hair." While that lifestyle was the dream of many young women, she was drawn to the "back to the land" community near Killaloe, ON, in the company of her husband, Luke Gibson. For the next ten years, they embraced the rugged and rough-hewn aspects of rural life, as well as welcoming two babies. When a fire destroyed their house in Killaloe, it set Sarah on a new path for herself and her children. She returned to Toronto and found employment with the Learning Disabilities Association as counsellor at Pedahbun Lodge, working with indigenous men with addiction issues. Sarah encountered a major challenge in her life as a single parent. She had two nearly concurrent car accidents, causing frontal brain injury, which required years of therapy, relearning how to read, type, and count. While working hard on regaining her personal health, she also developed her spiritual side, gaining Certification as a Non-Denominational Minister. She chose to become an Officiant for weddings and at the time of her death, she had officiated over 3,000 weddings of all kinds, to enormous success. Her personally written ceremonies were legendary. She was also one of the first Officiants to perform same sex marriages. Her love for music, especially Latin style, was well known both in Toronto and Cuba. Her facility with Spanish found her at her sister, Jane Bunnett's side, cheerleading many well-known Cuban projects of Jane's. As a Minister, she formed a modest Non-Profit organization, "Angels for Cuba," supplying much needed supplies and support to her beloved Cubans. Her support of the Santiago medical clinic was hugely appreciated - supplying medical supplies, laptops, medical books, toys, and even party supplies for the children in the wards. Sarah is survived by her brother, Peter Bunnett; sister, Jane Bunnett (Larry Cramer); daughter, Aleya Gibson (partner Julio Preuss); and son, Cody Gibson (Shamanta Chandran); and beloved granddaughter, Anjali. Also mourned by nephew, Noah Bunnett (Fee Lin and daughters, Chloe and Daphne); as well as her first cousins, Suze Weir, Ian Weir, and John Weir. There is also a multitude of people who will be mourning Sarah, who knew of her greatest talent - a deep and constant capacity for friendship. Plans are being made for a Celebration of Life later this fall; details will be posted through various social media.
