SEAN CLEARY Obituary

Sean Patrick Cleary, devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and renowned surgeon, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 52, on Sunday, August 10, 2025, while participating in a triathlon in Barrie, a recent passion in a lifelong dedication to athletic pursuits.

Sean is survived by his wife, Janice Clugston; his beloved sons, Owen and Christian; his parents, Michael and Eleanor Cleary; and his sisters, Lisa (Paul Reid, Sadie and Blythe) and Stephanie, as well as extended family.

Born in Toronto, Sean quickly revealed himself to be a remarkable young boy, adored by his parents. His adventurous spirit was nurtured as he spent his formative years living with his tight-knit family in various countries across Europe. These experiences of frequent moves and diverse cultures forged strong family bonds, making Sean a devoted son and fiercely protective brother. His adventures continued in high school at Neuchâtel, Switzerland, where he formed many deep-rooted connections. Thereafter, he pursued his undergraduate degree at Queen's University, where he developed an enduring love for The Tragically Hip and continued to make lifelong friends.

While pursuing his M.D. at Western University, Sean met Janice and continued to forge numerous enduring friendships. Upon graduation, Sean joined Janice in Toronto. After completing a general surgery residency, Sean pursued a fellowship in hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery at the University of Toronto. He also earned an MSc in cancer genetics and MPH, ultimately achieving his FRCSC designation. During this time, Sean and Janice married and found both a home and cherished friends in the incredible community of Leaside.

Sean achieved remarkable success in his heartbreakingly brief career, beginning when he joined the University Health Network as an HPB surgical oncologist at Princess Margaret. While at UHN, Sean established a research program in cancer epidemiology and became an Associate Professor. In 2017, Sean, Janice, Owen and Christian made the move to Rochester, Minnesota, where Sean was a Professor of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic and eventually took on the role of Division Chair of HPB and Pancreatic Surgery. Sean flourished professionally and thoroughly loved his time at Mayo. In 2023, he made the difficult decision to leave Mayo to return to Toronto where he held the Bernard and Ryna Langer Chair of the Division of General Surgery at the University of Toronto. Sean also held leadership roles in major surgical societies in both Canada and the U.S., including serving as President of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons, was a fellow and member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons, and the President of the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. Deeply driven and compassionate, Sean was a visionary leader who profoundly impacted his patients, mentees, and colleagues throughout his career, saving and enriching countless lives with his skill and care.

Outside his numerous professional achievements, Sean was a natural athlete who enjoyed playing hockey, tennis, and golf and excelled at skiing, both downhill and water. Growing up, he enjoyed time with his family at their cottage on Georgian Bay, and he especially relished the annual family ski trip. A lifelong member of the Granite Club, Sean was a longtime Masters swimmer and recently added cycling to his long list of athletic activities.

Most importantly, Sean was a caring husband and loving father. He was immensely proud of Owen and Christian, never failing to smile as he recounted stories of their accomplishments to all who asked. He gladly spent hours in cold rinks over the years watching and coaching hockey for both boys and shared his love of skiing, cottage life and the outdoors with them. He cherished every moment with his boys, from simple nights at home watching movies to camping in Algonquin.

Sean is profoundly missed by devastated family, friends and colleagues. Fully, Completely.

Friends will be received at Humphrey Funeral Home (1403 Bayview Avenue) on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Blessed Sacrament Parish (2982 Yonge Street) at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2025. I am in shock hearing this sad news. I have assisted Dr.Cleary in many procedures that required image guidance( intra-operative ultrasound guided tumor/mass ablation). I will dearly miss your professionalism and our random coffee break meetings at Starbucks. May God rest your soul Sean...

Dr. Cleary treated my late husband in 2013 for colon cancer that spread to the liver. He told my spouse "we don't give up on young people" and performed 2 separate envelope pushing surgeries that gave us another precious 18 months together. During my late husband's two 3-4 week stays at Toronto General Dr. Cleary visited Jason every day without fail, even sometimes as late as 8-9pm. The fact that such a renowned surgeon who I am sure had a very busy schedule as well as a family to get home to would do this always stuck with me. I know his profession likely came with some sacrificed family time but patients like us were immensely grateful for his gifts as well as his kindness. This is why I have not forgotten Dr. Cleary some 12 years later. I hope his family will take some comfort in stories like these showing the kind of person he was. I am very sorry for their loss.

All of the UHN Family are deeply saddened and shocked by Dr Cleary´s passing. Our very deepest sympathy is with his family - Janice, Owen and Christian, and his parents and siblings. Since receiving this sad news we have all reflected on our privilege of working with Sean and the tragic loss of such a skilled and generous colleague.
Those fortunate patients cared for by Sean are in shock and deep regret on the passing of a truly gifted doctor.
Beyond being a world class academic surgeon, Sean was a kind, generous, supportive colleague. Passionate about science and discovery, he advanced the understanding pancreatic, hepatic and biliary cancers and his work changed practice around the world. An inspiring educator, students, residents and fellows enjoyed how he shared his knowledge and energized learning.
We deal with illness and loss frequently at UHN, but when we lose one of the very best of us, we realize how lucky we were to have Sean as a friend and colleague, albeit for far to short a time. Our thoughts are with his family.
Kevin Smith.

I am deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Dr. Cleary. He was my surgeon in 2012 for a Whipple, and again in 2024 for a total pancreatectomy. More than just a great surgeon, he was a wonderful person to speak with. His knowledge and accessible communication style brought clarity to things that were complicated and confusing. He conveyed a sense of urgency without causing panic.

I think what I enjoyed most about Dr. Cleary, was his occasional touch of humour - it really humanized and brought warmth to what was otherwise a daunting experience.

I will be forever grateful to have met Dr. Cleary, and benefited from his expertise and compassion. He gave me my life back - twice.

My thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends and colleagues.

I first met Sean in his own office at the Toronto General Hospital in 2012, when I received the Travelling Fellowship Award of the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. From that moment, and in every encounter thereafter, he was always friendly, cordial, and generous with me. He had a very special way of welcoming many Argentine surgeons who had the opportunity to know him and learn from him. His passing is a great loss, and his memory will remain an inspiration for all of us in the HPB community. I extend my warmest condolences to his family

I met Sean via AHPBA. He was kind to me and provided mentorship even though there was no benefit for him. I appreciated his quiet wise advice and thoughtful approach to leadership. Praying for his family.
