SERGIO BENETTI Obituary

1945 - 2024 He was the most charismatic man in the world, with the handsome face and those beautiful, mischievous dark brown eyes. He was larger than life, hilarious and eccentric. He also had the most completely inappropriate sense of humour. I'm not sure if it was the Italian accent or because he was so charming, but he got away with it. Sergio would have loved nothing more than to have his most racy stories printed here. I can't do that Sergio, but we did share them at the memorial service, and we know you heard us laughing. Most importantly, Sergio Benetti had the most kind and generous heart. He was a wonderful man and so accomplished. In 1983, he left a successful career at Air Canada after surviving a plane accident where he heroically saved the lives of several of the passengers on board. He would later be honoured with the title of Cavalieri from the government of Italy. A legend on Spadina Avenue for over 40 years, Sergio Benetti Inc. was the shop where you could find the most interesting Italian fashion in Toronto and the most unique owner. Known as "The Don of Spadina," he was an institution so respected for his special eye, talent and taste. His store became a gathering place where his loyal customers (and there were many) came to visit regularly, not just for his sartorial expertise, but to be regaled by his incredible and outrageous stories. He was a fabulous raconteur who would offer free counselling, cappuccinos and the loving companionship of Marcello and Roy, his beloved Golden Retrievers. Sadly, the pandemic would devastate his business. Serious health problems followed and in September of 2022, he suffered a stroke. Soon, there was a diagnosis of vascular dementia. In May of 2023, Sergio moved into Lakeside LTC where the remarkable staff took such special care of him in what would be the last year of his life. Though his illness progressed so rapidly, the light always remained in his eyes, even on the last evening. As the news of Sergio's passing spread and the tributes poured in, one of the most moving came from an old friend who phoned to express his condolences. Barely able to speak, he broke down and said, "I'm sorry. I just can't imagine the world without Sergio." Oh Sergio, there really was no one like you! What a beautiful and profound impact you made on so many lives. It's been one year and you are missed beyond words. Ken Murton was Sergio's partner for 30 years.

Sergio was a very unique human being and was a special person who never failed to make you smile when you visited him in his shop on Spadina. I used to sometimes just visit him when I was in the neighborhood to speak to him, in Italian of course, to pay my respects and to share a laughter with him. He was always incredibly welcoming, regardless if you were just passing by or there to buy one of his incredible pieces of clothing. Anecdotes from his past and present always filled the room with joy and laughter. He was incredibly generous, especially to the people that I brought to him unexpectedly. My friends became immediately his friends and they were showered with compliments, but only if deserved. For a very long time, I will admit for nearly three decades, Sergio was the only purveyor of my fashion, with his keen eye to exact fittings. New clothing suppliers can be found but one cannot replace Sergio the man, the friend, the fashionista, the quintessential raconteur, the legend. I missed you the day that I came by when I found the shop closed. Sorry that I never said a proper farewell, one that you truly deserved. Resta in pace! My most sincere condolences to Ken. E condoglianze alla sorella Paola, che non ho mai incontrata, ma sembrava di conoscerla perche’ Sergio parlava sempre di te! Un abbraccio, Giuseppe Clementi e famiglia

Where to begin? I have known Sergio for over 30 years. I think my entire wardrobe was purchased there. There will never be anyone like Sergio. Anyone I took there was impressed. Oh he had a wit! All the way from that stupid picture of Putin onwards. The stories of his sister and nephews in Italy. He knew anyone of any consequence on Spadina. To Ken: I am sorry for your troubles . God bless Sergio.

Sergio was so much more than a friend... he was like a brother, he was family. Working with him at the Spadina store for all those years was a joy and a privilege. We laughed endlessly, teased each other like siblings, and shared memories I´ll hold close for the rest of my life. ESTOP it....

His charm, that outrageous sense of humour, and his big, generous heart made every day brighter. Even in his toughest moments, there was always a spark in his eyes.

Dear Ken, my heart is with you. Thank you for loving him so fiercely and for being his constant through everything. The world indeed feels different without Sergio, but his spirit lives on in every story, every smile, and everyone who loved him.

I miss him more than words can ever say. Xoxo Sonia

Dear Ken your tribute left out nothing.... Sergio was unique. There was no one like him, and everyone loved him. Apart from his huge person's, he was the most professional during his time with Air Canada. A total professional.
Dearly missed by all who knew him

Dear Ken, your Sergio was definitely "one of a kind". His humour and exuberance made me laugh so many times with his on the street tales and gossip. He will be sorely missed by all, but especially by you and "the boys".

Knew Sergio from Air Canada. Shopped his shop several times. It always involved several hours because there was always a "visit" and exchanging memories.
Dearly, sadly missed.
Thank you Ken, for sharing this wonderful tribute.
