Shawn PORTER Obituary

SHAWN DAVID PORTER Lost suddenly and too soon on September 18, 2019 at the age of 57. Cherished husband of Terri. Stepfather and intellectual sparring partner of Feryn (Pierce). Much loved son of Joyce and Don. Beloved big brother of Sarah (Travis). Shawn was so much to us - fierce legal advocate, champion of the forensic sciences, selfless mentor, devoted and unwavering friend, problem solver, trivia expert of esoteric topics - a modern day renaissance man. He was extraordinarily brilliant, in both book smarts and street smarts, and fiercely ethical. He had the seamless ability to connect with everyone he met with authenticity. As a self-proclaimed celebratory guy, Shawn was always up for anything: nail biting rides at the CNE, modern dance performances, baseball games (even in a rough season), and indoor skydiving. Shawn was passionate about the pursuit of the perfect cup of coffee. He was a connoisseur of the full spectrum of libations and culinary arts, but also enjoyed the simplicity of a good bacon sandwich. His travels took him from the rough and rustic north to the monasteries of Nepal to the finest inns and spas in Canada and beyond. He was kind and generous to all - including his furry friends - and despite being presented with numerous challenges along the way, he was always extremely grateful for what life provided him. He had a sharp wit and wonderful sense of humour, finding joy in every occasion. Shawn loved a broad range of music spanning KISS to Etta James to the lyrical stylings of the Swedish chef. He was a rock-climbing enthusiast, an NFL fan and a dedicated follower of Belichick and Brady. Of all his passions, he loved his gorgeous girl, Terri, the most. Shawn beamed with pride and happiness in Terri's presence and the eight years they spent together were the best of his too-short life. At Shawn's request, there will be no service. Details on a celebration of life to follow. In memory of Shawn, and in lieu of flowers, donations to St. Michael's Hospital or The Kidney Foundation would be appreciated. Three weeks after Shawn's passing there are still tears falling here at the office. He was a man of such substance. We now see just how deeply and meaningfully he connected with people, senior and junior, lawyers and support staff, food vendors and scientists. He was a port in the storm, a rock of support for many, many people - including me. I will honour his memory by trying with all my might to be more like him.

Shawn was an exemplar for others in our profession. He came to court prepared. He had jettisoned the spurious, pointlessly adversarial arguments made by other lawyers on the case and stripped his argument down to its essentials, so that he could defend the Crown's position as obvious and just. That made him a much better counsel than the countless lawyers who hurl half-formed thoughts around the courtroom. His manner was as warm as his submissions were compelling.

These qualities made him a formidable opponent for the defence. Shawn could make me acutely uncomfortable when court was in session. Then, at a recess, he could charm me completely, with a quip, a wry observation, an apt anecdote or even a disarming compliment.

Shawn struck me as a smart, broad-minded, generous, altogether lovely man with a life outside the law. Though I knew him only professionally, I feel a sharp sense of loss at his passing. My deep condolences to those he leaves behind.

Shawn was a dedicated and vigilant member of the Research Ethics Board at Sunnybrook Hospital. He was funny and insightful. I am not sure how he found the time to participate given all his other commitments. We spoke very not long ago waiting for the elevator as to our plans for the summer. I regret not having the opportunity to know him better.

I was so sorry to hear of Shawn's sudden death and I am grateful to have known him. Many great memories of sharing stories and jokes in the hallway, at a meeting, on the sidewalk. Shawn was such a compassionate and passionate man. He wore his heart on his sleeve and you just knew that he was unwavering in his loyalty. My deepest condolences to his loved ones... a great loss indeed.

Shawn was real. He was kind. He was a dear friend. He adored his wife and declared his adoration with joy and frequency. I know for sure that I will miss him every day. Such a person, one who always did the right thing, always thought of others, and who worked so hard is a rarity. He was an important and impressive man who was entirely humble. We should all try our level best to follow his example. Thank you, Shawn. It was an honor to have been your friend. I love you.

Shawn, will be greatly missed by all of us at St. Clair Dental Associates. I had been taking care of Shawn for many years and he never failed to brighten my day. I still managed to get his teeth cleaned while we shared stories. There were times we laughed so greatly, other patients would peek their head into the room and want to join!
My deepest condolences to his family and a special hug & kiss to Terry.

Shawn Porter was tremendously welcoming and supportive during my two-year secondment in the Scarborough Crown Attorney's Office in the early 1980's and he maintained a friendly comradery at 720 Bay Street over the years since then. It is with great sadness that I learned of the loss of such a smart, kind and wonderful man. My deepest condolences to Shawn's family.

Shawn was a special person and he brightened up any office that was blessed enough to have him. Brilliant, witty, funny but never patronizing to support staff. A brave man with health challenges that he faced full on. A gentleman who would stand when being introduced to one's father. God Bless you Shawn and may you rest in peace. My condolences to Terri, his family, and his colleagues at CLOC.

A superb counsel with a wonderful sense of humour , I met Shawn Porter on an environmental prosecution in Kenora when Shawn was assisting Eddie Greenspan. Shawn's intelligence, and quick wit was readily apparent. We learned we shared a love of fine food ( we agreed the local chip wagon served the best fries in town ) As a colleague he shined as crown counsel handling the most difficult cases involving complex forensic evidence. He was generous in sharing his wisdom and expertise. He will be dearly missed by all of us who were fortunate enough to know him. He leaves us far too soon. My sincere condolences to his family!

Shawn was a wonderful person, so fun loving and measured.

Shakespeare said it best- His life was gentle and the elements so mixed in him, that nature might stand up and say to all the world -this was a man.

Condolences to Terri and his family. Gone too soon, he will be missed.
