SHEILA GOODWIN Obituary

January 7, 1952 - December 15, 2024 Sheila Goodwin died on December 15th at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, surrounded by family. She leaves her partner of 53 years, George Goodwin; her three sons, Christopher (Kimberley), James (Susan) and William (Elizabeth); her brothers, Maurice (Anne) and Colin; and her devoted sister, Star (Stephen). Sheila also leaves her beloved grandchildren, Nigel and Blythe. She was predeceased by her eldest brother, Bruce. Sheila was born in Saint John, New Brunswick to Sam and Stella Campbell. Recognizing the importance of education, her mother encouraged Sheila to follow in her brother's footsteps and study at Mount Allison University, from where she graduated in 1974. At the beginning of second year university, she met George Goodwin. They were inseparable for 53 years. Sheila took mothering very seriously: Chris, Jamie and Will were her life's work and her proudest accomplishment. She never forgot her upbringing and approached all endeavours from a social justice perspective. Perhaps the greatest joy Sheila experienced in her final years came from her two grandchildren, Nigel and Blythe. The obvious bond between grandmother and grandchildren was her reward. Sheila was one of those quiet, steady, committed people blessed with the gifts of good judgment, common sense and deep love of family. She did not squander these gifts but used them wisely and diligently. She rescued a broken 17-year-old boy in 1971 who became her husband, helping him turn into the man he is today, writing these words. She bore three wonderful sons, now building their own families. She ended up having the daughters she always wanted when her sons married and brought them home. She was blessed with wonderful grandchildren. Sheila's funeral will be held at the Church of St. Timothy, 100 Old Orchard Grove, Toronto on Tuesday, January 7th at 11 a.m. A reception in the church hall will follow. The service will be streamed at https://www.youtube.com/@churchofst.timothynorthtor3290/streams Visitation with the family will be at Morley Bedford Funeral Services, 159 Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto on Monday, January 6th from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The family requests that donations in memory of Sheila be made to Somerset Pre-School, which her mother helped to found more than 50 years ago and on whose Board her sister Star currently sits: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/somerset-pre-school-inc/

The first time a met a Goodwin was in 2003 when I met Christopher Goodwin, as a refugee student studying at Mount Allison University. We became friends and on my first Christmas here in Canada, Christopher, after getting permission from his parents, George and Sheila, invited me to stay with the family in Toronto for Christmas. That's when I met the amazing Sheila Goodwin. I was very nervous but the whole family blew me away with their love and kindness. James and William were very young at the time, but were very nice and kind to me, and still are when I visit.
It was really heart-breaking when Chris to me her Mom passed on. Please, accept my condolences, George and the family left behind. Sheila Goodwin has completed her duties here on Earth and is now in a better place. It may be hard on the grandchildren, Nigel and Lady B (Blythe), but they will understand. I'm so sorry my friends that I won't be at the funeral but will be watching the livestream on YouTube.
May you rest in Eternal Peace, Mrs. Sheila Goodwin. Your kindness and love you gave your family and those around you will continue to inspire those left behind.
