SONIA WIGHT Obituary

(nee Roberton) (January 2, 1933 - August 19, 2025) Sonia passed away peacefully, August 19, 2025, after a long battle with dementia. Sonia was the youngest child of Ken and Carol (nee Patterson) Roberton. She was predeceased by her two older brothers, Irvine (Elaine) and Douglas (Barbara). She is survived by her two sons, Ric (Marilou) and Peter (Robin); and her grandchildren, Victoria, Lisa, Alexandra and Michael. Sonia made many lifelong friends from her time at Roslyn Public School in Montreal. Many happy family memories were made at her family cottage in Ste. Agathe-des-Monts in the Laurentian Mountains, where she enjoyed all types of sporting activities. In 1955, she married the love of her life, G. Earle Wight (predeceased), and lived in Oshawa, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Montreal, before settling in Toronto. The second love of her life was the game of Bridge, playing daily until 2022. She was a competitive duplicate bridge player and achieved her Gold Life Masters. She was generous with her skill, and was happy to share her love of the game by teaching Bridge to all who wanted to learn at the Laurentian Golf and Country Club. Her bridge game was much better than her golf game, but she loved them both. The family is eternally grateful to Jenina, Jeanifer and Alegria of Home Instead for the wonderful care they provided to Sonia. A private burial will be at the beautiful Clarke Cemetery in Ste. Agathe. The family will have a casual celebration of life at their home (7 Divadale Drive) on Thursday, October 16th, 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sunnybrook Research Institutes' Specific Purpose Fund #236425 - Dr. McLaurin's research in dementia.

Yesterday

Aunt Sonia was a beautiful force in the lives of the Irwin family. We loved her and she loved us. For my part, I cherish memories of Sonia presiding over spaghetti dinners (with a little wine), while visiting my pal Ric at Ste Agathe. In our youth, we sometimes we called her "the General" -- with awe -- because Sonia was a beautifully strong and uncompromising woman.
