I got an MBA from Queens and a sense of humour from Sonya Corkum. I was shattered to hear of her passing. My favourite memory is meeting her for dinner at Chutney Mary on The kings Road in
London. Gordon Ramsay was dining a couple of tables away from us that evening. She signalled the waiter over and explained with a very straight face that she thought that she had gone to high school with that guy over there. Very British waiter informed of her celebrity status of Mr Ramsay as I had already told her. Let´s buy him a drink she said. I talked her out of it and I´m sincerely sorry I did. She was one of the best people I have ever known. I will toast her sometime when I am close to Halifax. Tonight, I´m in Vancouver.

Like so many others here, I had the great pleasure and privilege of working with Sonya, first at Safe Kids Canada and in later stages of our careers. She was indeed a fabulous mentor and generous boss, pushing me to be more confident and get out of my comfort zone. And, yes, her humour was wonderful. There are stories that make me laugh to this day. What a gift to have known Sonya, and I'm very sad to think of her gone. My sincere condolences to her family and close friends.

My deepest condolences to Sonya´s family. I was so very sorry to hear of her passing. I am a resident at 914 Yonge and first met Sonya 10 years ago when she was a director on the building´s board of directors. She was a wonderful, caring and friendly person - very smart, so down-to-earth, and she had such a good sense of humour. I will truly miss having her as a friend in our 914 Yonge community. May she rest in peace.

I had the great pleasure of working with Sonya during the early years of Safe Kids Canada. The pleasure was not just from working together and getting to know her as a person. She was, as describe so well in the obituary, a many sided person and all the sides were good. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her well.

I have been a friend of Sonya's ever since our days at CIHR. I have been in constant contact with her even through her illness and in fact we texted on Valentine's day. I will never forget her boundless joy for life and the wonderful moments we shared. I miss her already.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Sonya´s passing. Sonya was an unforgettable presence and a dear colleague and friend. Whether at work or playing golf, Sonya was always warm, open, generous, thoughtful, and hilarious. At the same time, a talented, capable, and competent professional. Genuinely, one of the funniest people I ever met. Never a dull moment with Sonya. I can´t believe she is gone. Rest in peace Sonya.

Sonya and I first crossed paths over 10 years ago and worked closely for 2 years when she was a KT Consultant here in Toronto. That period left an indelible mark in the best way on my work and leadership style -- Sonya brought the work to life, making it matter, making it fun and making sure it wasn't complicated! Reading the tributes, I count myself as incredibly lucky to be part of her tribe of early career women she mentored over her incredible career.
Leading with laughter (and love) will stay with me as part of your legacy Sonya.
Sending my heartfelt condolences to everyone who cared for her.

Sonya and I were classmates at Dalhousie. We had a small, tight knit group of friends that supported each other through the trials and tribulations of undergraduate years. There was much laughter,of course, often courtesy of Sonya. Her class presentations reflected who she was; an intelligent young woman whose sense of humor was ever present. Her professional successes post Dalhousie were impressive and unsurprising. In reading all the tributes from Sonya´s family and friends the one thing that stand out is that Sonya remained herself throughout her professional career. That was her superpower. Godspeed Door.

Sonya was such an important and influential mentor and friend in my life. I was so lucky to have her support and guidance as I started my career.
Whether we were sharing a text exchange or meal, planning a workshop or travelling, I´ve never laughed so hard in my life. There are so many memories I will forever look back on with a smile on my face.
You will be so missed Sonya.

Sonya Lasagna... that's how she signed her emails to me. I met Sonya in 1980 when she was waitressing in Moncton during summer breaks from Dal U, where she was studying for her B.Sc. We became close friends and have remained friends ever since. I watched her evolve from a bright, sweet, somewhat shy young girl to a bright, determined, and not so shy leading Canadian health executive. The sparkle in her eye and her quick wit made her a joy to be around. Many don't know, but Sonya had two secret ambitions... she always dreamed of being a full-time stand-up comedienne, and in retirement she wanted to open a pizza/donair stand at Pizza Corner in downtown Halifax. Her imagination was as boundless as her sense of humour. She was one of a kind and will be missed by all whom had the pleasure of knowing her. Sincere condolences to her mom, brother, extended family and friends.

I was so sad to hear about Sonya and miss her already. I remember and always appreciated that no matter how young I was, that she always treated me as a person - not as a child. Mostly, I remember both Sylvia and my mom (Lisa) laughing a lot whenever Sonya was around. Over the years, whenever we all spent time together, we enjoyed good food, movies, music and stories - but most of all lots of laughter! We all miss her.

I was sad to hear of Sonya's passing at such a young age and realize that Sonya, Sylvia and my mom (Lisa S.) became friends while working together at the age I am now. Over the following 30 years, they enjoyed many girls' weekends and vacations. I'm grateful that they often included us in their fun. My heart goes out to Sonya's family.

I am still in disbelief that Sonya is no longer with us and miss her already. Thinking of her, happy memories collide from over many years as friends, beginning as colleagues at Sick Kids' and enjoying many trips and vacations together; from New York City to Newfoundland to "Cove Cottage". As a fellow Maritimer, I will always fondly remember good times shared at her beach house on Nova Scotia's South Shore. My heartfelt condolences go out to Sonya's family.

So sorry to hear about Sonya-raconteur extraordinaire, funster bar none, passionate Maritimer, spontaneous singer and all around warm and caring person. We came to know each other with work Sonya was doing at Holland Bloorview and then our paths crossed many times in various ways. You will surely be missed by all who were privileged to know you.

Sonya was bar none the funniest person. She could take a basic moment and with her observations turn it into a very funny moment leading us all to doubling over and holding our guts- we were laughing so hard. I worked for Sonya twice - at Safe Kids and CIHR - and at very formative times of my life and her sayings and style stuck with me -and have influenced me. For instance, I often say what would you do if you only had a dollar. She worked hard on my up speaking and imposter syndrome telling me to have the confidence I should have and deserved to have. Over the years she helped me find work and listened to my kevetching and I listened to hers. We became peers and friends. We had too many funny stories to recount. I know she will be somewhere now redoing how they make their sandwiches bc she couldn't stand a poorly run Java Joes and was always sharing comments on how they could do things so much faster! I will miss her and want her family to know how much of an influence she had in me. Buckle up and stay safe Sonya. We had a fun time together - you will be missed very much.
