STANLEY FOX Obituary

(March 28, 1928 – May 20, 2025) Stanley Harold Fox passed away peacefully, in Victoria, BC, on May 20, 2025, at the age of 97. Born in Vancouver on March 28, 1928, Stan led a life defined by creativity, curiosity, and a profound love of film. A pioneer in Canadian film and television, Stan turned a personal passion into a lifelong profession. He was instrumental in founding the Vancouver Film Society and went on to build a remarkable career with the CBC in Vancouver, and later as an educator and producer with Simon Fraser University, York University, and TV Ontario in Toronto. After his formal retirement, he continued to share his enthusiasm and insight through a second career with Rogers TV. Throughout his life, Stan remained deeply engaged in the world of cinema. He was a regular and joyful presence at film festivals across the globe, with the Cannes Film Festival holding a special place in his heart. More than just an aficionado, Stan was a generous mentor to generations of aspiring filmmakers, many of whom credit him with shaping their paths. Stan was predeceased by his beloved wife, Janet W. Fox (née Cates); and will be dearly missed by his son, Charles (Kari); daughter, Janet (Teeny) (Keith); granddaughter, Natalie (Brady); and great-granddaughter, Daphne, with whom he shared a special bond and delight. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Amica Douglas House in Victoria, where Stan spent his final years in comfort and care. A private family gathering will be held, with plans for a celebration of life to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to a film education initiative or arts organization of your choice, in memory of Stan's enduring legacy.

It's difficult to encapsulate words that truly define who Stan Fox was. Brilliant, articulate, quirky humoured (but funny,) animated, respected, good listener, dedicated to his field(s) of expertise in the film industry. An intellect of many sorts.
Kind, Playful, and truly so much more. I'm grateful for having known him and for him having been a meaningful part of me and my sons lives. Godspeed Stanley.

I met Stan in 1986 and we went on to have many long and enjoyable talks about film, the arts, and life in general. I really appreciated having him and Janet nearby in James Bay. He was good company and a good friend, and I miss those talks very much.

Stan was my film professor, then my boss at TVOntario but more importantly, my friend. I have the fondest memories of insightful conversations at delightful roast beef dinners with Stan and Janet. My deepest sympathy. Risa
