STEPHEN LEIGHTON Obituary

June 25, 1951 - May 22, 2025 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Stephen Robert Leighton, Professor Emeritus of philosophy at Queen's University, on May 22, 2025, in Kingston. He was born in Montreal on June 25, 1951, to Florence Edna Millard and Rev. Robert James Leighton. Stephen's love of philosophy began with his undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta. He completed his PhD at the University of Texas at Austin, with extended study at Brasenose College, at the University of Oxford. Stephen joined the Philosophy Department at Queen's University in 1986, where he taught until his retirement in 2022. Stephen was a devoted husband to Deborah; loving father to Catherine (Alex Meyers) and Dorathea; and grandfather to Cameron and Gavin. He is survived by his sister, Susan Leighton. He cherished his family and took great pride in their accomplishments. His home was a place of warmth and love, where meaningful conversations and laughter were abundant. A memorial service to celebrate Stephen's life will be held at the University Club at Queen's University on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the United Way. Stephen Leighton's compassionate spirit will be deeply missed. He will be remembered as a true scholar, a mentor to many, and a loving family man.

Stephen was a model for me. He was always so kind and thoughtful and took the time to really listen to what others were saying. He considered his responses carefully and then always offered up an insight that was profound. I will miss him deeply.

Steve was a terrific colleague, a subtle thinker, and a kind and wise person. I am glad to have known him and Queen's Philosophy is lucky to have had him for as long as it did. I picture him, now, lost in discussion with Aristotle on virtue and the emotions. My condolences to his loved ones.

Steve was my admirable colleague for many years at Queen´s. You could always count on sensible, reasoned advice and opinions from him, either in private or in meetings . He was also a careful and original scholar and a good teacher. Vale Steve.

Steve was my first philosophy professor and helped make the philosophy professor I am today. He was extremely kind to me at a time when I was struggling. What a wonderful man.
