Stephen MCKENZIE Obituary

DR. STEPHEN MCKENZIE It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Stephen McKenzie at the age of 68, after a courageous battle with cancer. Stephen was a loving husband to his wife, a proud father to his son and daughter, and an adoring grandfather to his grandson. Stephen graduated from the University of Ottawa medical school with highest academic standing before embarking on a 40-year career as a much-loved and respected neurologist at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga, where he was one of the neurology department's founding members. Always generous with his time in caring for patients, he was a leader in the field of multiple sclerosis. He was equally a passionate and dedicated educator and mentor to three generations of medical students at the University of Toronto. He had a lifelong love of literature and classical music and took great pleasure in the gifts of nature as an avid sailor and cyclist. Believing strongly in active citizenship, he spoke with elected representatives about the need to preserve our natural world for future generations. Private family cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Stephen's life will take place at Credit Valley Golf & Country Club, 2500 Old Carriage Road, Mississauga, on Sunday, August 14th from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. (masks are requested to be worn). The family would appreciate donations in Stephen's memory to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

My deepest condolences to your family. Dr. McKenzie was such a beautiful and generous doctor and man. He was my husbands neurologist for many years. Dr. McKenzie always treated my husband with so much dignity and respect. We always felt that we were his only patients as he took his time and shared his love with us .
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him,
May he rest in peace.
Amen
With so much love,
Tony, Sonia, Cosimo and Alessia Commisso

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. McKenzie in June 2021 when I was visiting from Calgary and accompanying my father for an appointment. Dr. McKenzie was a such a kind and graceful man who was so good to my dad, but also to me (even though he & I met just the one time). He chatted with me about my own health care background and was so supportive and genuine. We were so sad to know he was ill and deeply saddened now to know of his passing. We will remember him very fondly.

Earlier this week, It was with great sadness that I learned of Dr. McKenzie´s passing. He was my neurologist for the past nine years. He was a fine doctor, compassionate and caring, and provided me with excellent, conscientious care. I will miss him, but I´m grateful for the opportunity to have been his patient. My deepest condolences to his family and others who felt privileged to have him as their doctor.

I was sad to discover the news of Steve´s premature death on the CMA website. Steve and I were classmates, and pals, during the long days of medical school. We lost touch afterwards, but it was a pleasure to meet him again at a med school reunion several years ago. He was still the same bright and sympathetic person as he had ever been. Please accept my sincere sympathies on your loss - he will be missed .

I was so sorry and shocked to hear about Steve's illness. The last time I saw him he was so healthy and fit, cycling all the way to Guelph to visit his daughter. I met Steve in high school in Ottawa many years ago and last saw him at a high school reunion dinner a couple of years ago, where he was his typically laughing, good-natured self. My deepest condolences to his family: Johanna, Laura and Cameron and his grandson.

Please accept my sincere condolences. Over 20 years ago, Dr. McKenzie treated me for stroke symptoms at Mississauga Hospital. He kept me well informed while he researched the cause and I found him to be a very kind and caring physician.

I spent a few weeks at Stephen's practice in the summer of 1988 after 2nd year Med School. Occasionally, I'd remind him it was formative. He was a model of caring and learning. Thank you for sharing him with us.
