Stephen Michael Nugent
September 23, 1930 -
December 13, 2017 Peacefully, at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, surrounded by his five daughters. Our father was born in Dublin, Ireland, the second son of Bernard (Barney) Nugent and Margaret Nalty. Following completion of medical school and a residency program in psychiatry, he married our mother, Maeve Walsh in 1958 and five daughters quickly followed. Dad's practice took our family to London, England, Perth, Australia, London, Ontario and finally Toronto. He was a former Director of Community Services at London Psychiatric Hospital and Director of the Psychotherapy Unit at the former Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. Dad took great pleasure in his family. He was adored by his daughters who saw him as the ultimate 'hip dad'in the 1970s due to his love of contemporary music and culture. He gave us the best childhood any child could expect and was unfailingly supportive of our ideas or endeavours - no matter how wild or far fetched. Dad was a complex man who followed his own beat; intensely private and fiercely independent but his charm, humour and deep interest in people attracted all who met him. Following retirement, he turned to journalism, writing short fiction and articles for Xtra! and Fab magazines and self-publishing a book on his uncle's service and death in the Spanish Civil War. Dad's taste in clothes, art and furnishings was impeccable and he loved his Yorkville condo where he could enjoy all that Toronto life had to offer - TIFF, COC, TSO, the Yorkville library and long chats with his daughters over coffee at Starbucks. We are so grateful that he could live independently in his condo until the end. Steve is survived by his former wife, Maeve; daughters, Fiona (Carl), Deirdre, Helen (Jim), Sheena and Olivia (Don); and four grandchildren, Conor, Devlin, Liam and Oliver. Brother of Jim (deceased) and uncle to Maureen (Joe), Anne (Paul), Kate (David) and James Nugent. At Dad's request, there will be no funeral service. A celebration of his life will take place in early 2018. Please email
[email protected] for details. Donations to the Casey House Foundation or Save the Children (Rwanda) would be appreciated by the family. Dad, you will always live on in our hearts.
