STUART EATON Obituary

STUART SCOTT EATON We announce with heavy hearts yet with fond remembrance the passing of Stuart Scott Eaton, who departed peacefully on January 26, 2024, at Toronto Western Hospital, at the age of 96. Born on April 19, 1927, in Edinburgh, Stuart was a cherished figure, known for his vivacious spirit and kind heart. Stuart's Canadian story began in 1954, leading him into a remarkable career in advertising. His tenure at McCann, where he evolved from a copywriter to a creative director, spanned across Toronto, New York, and London. Stuart's professional journey was defined by steady and impressive growth, marked by his innovative ideas and a keen understanding of the advertising world. He was more than just a brilliant advertiser; he was a mentor, sharing his wisdom and kindness with young professionals, helping to shape their careers. Music, especially jazz, played a significant role in Stuart's life. His skills as a semi-professional trumpet player were a source of joy in his youth and remained a beloved hobby well into his 60s. His passion for jazz was a reflection of his lively and rhythmic approach to life. At the core of Stuart's world was his family. He married Dorothy Eaton (née Parker) on October 5, 1952. Their marriage, a journey of love and companionship, lasted until Dorothy's passing in 2017. He leaves behind a loving family: his children, Scott Martin Eaton (Marie Lawless), Stephen Parker Eaton (Anna Eaton), Fiona Jane Eaton, and Alexander Douglas Eaton; and his siblings, Kenneth Eaton (Mary Eaton), Martin Bellman (Sue Bellman, Debbie Bellman), Margaret Plowman (Conrad Plowman), and Susan Rubenstein (Paul Rubenstein). Stuart is also fondly remembered by his beloved niece, Vanessa Eaton-Acken, her husband Steve Acken and their children, Samantha Acken and James Acken. Stuart's legacy also continues through his grandchildren, Charlie Eaton, Emma Clements Eaton (T. Erik Mason Miller), Katie Eaton (Jeremy Sager), and Elizabeth Eaton; and his great-grandchildren, Lachlan Eaton Miller and Toby Eaton Miller. A celebration of Stuart's life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the animal Charity of Your Choice, in honour of Stuart's love for animals. As we remember Stuart, we celebrate a life filled with laughter, wisdom, and love. He touched many lives, not just as a professional but as a friend, a mentor, and a family man. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

I met Stu's son Steve through the ad business, and after we became fast friends, I ended up working for his dad at McCann Erickson, where Stu was the CEO. To say he made an impression was an understatement - he was kind, modest, funny, and commanded a room like no one else. Over the years I got to see him only now and then, either in the business or through Steve and Anna. The last time I saw him I bumped into the clan at an important birthday at Le Select Bistro (I think Stu's 90th?), and snapped a picture. That picture ended up being one of the first slides I used in my very first Introduction To Advertising lecture at Humber College for eight years - I would tell a funny story about how Stu had bluntly intervened in a meeting with a roomful of fast-talking clients and agency people, to make the point that you don't need to use fancy language or big words to be a powerful communicator, a point that helped make anxious new students feel better about their future prospects. His kindness and influence was deeply enduring - still is.

Condolences to Steve, Anna, Alex, and the many, many members of the Eaton family.

I'm thinking of Steve, Alex and Fiona at the loss of their Dad. I realize there are more family members who I don't know; the loss if felt by all. Stu was a force of nature.

I will always associate Stu with laughter. He always seemed to be either laughing, or making others laugh.
